Okay, I just got a BM42, and I just can't let a good thing alone, so there are a couple of modifications I want to try.

First, I'd like ot harden the latch and the surfaces of the handle that the latch contacts. From what I understand, I simply heat it to red with a propane torch and let cool. My question is about the pin the latch pivots about. Will the heat cause the pin to stick to the titanium latch or handle?

My next question is about the blade. Does anyone know to what hardness Benchmade heat-treats the 12C27 blade?

--thanks,
JB

Do you know the alloy of the latch? It may or may not work with a propane torch, you may actually anneal it some just heating and letting it cool, depending on the alloy of course. Cant answer the rest of the questions, dont even know what a BM42 is!

According to Benchmade's site, the handles are cast 6Al4V Ti. I would assume the latch is the same, although we all know what assuming does

Here's a BM42 for ya: http://www.benchmade.com/images/42.jpg

So, I guess I have another question: are the handles and latch 6/4 Ti?

P.S., I'm now quite glad I posted this here rather than just grabbing a torch; I don't know anything about hardening Ti (Ti I deal with is either not heat-treated, or comes that way from the supplier).
