Titanium and Coke

Just got back from Deer camp and I shot a very nice 12 point buck, dressed out to 190 lbs. Anyway we were talking about our knives and I carry a MPF 1 Titanium and I mentioned that Mission has had one in salt water for over 4 years and looks as good as the day it went in. Anyway one of the guys said if you put it in Coke (as in cola) it would slowly dissapear or dissolve. Is this true? I didn't think Titanium could be dissolved in Coke like a steel knife. Anybody help me out here, I told the guy I didn't think it would dissolve but he insisted it would.

To my knowledge cola of any type will do little to nothing to Ti. However, some makers use a cola solution for anodizing Ti. While Trisodiumphosphate works much better, cola contians enough of the right chemicals to be able to produce ti oxide. But this take a current, and I believe that just the straight up soda will do nothing.

I don't think there's anything in Titanium to prevent it from being dissovled by acids. Coke is very acidic, but it's certainly not acidic enough to dissolve metals in a short period of time.

You might want to check out www.snopes2.com . If you scroll down, there's a section called "Cokelore". It talks about all kinds of urban legends involving Coke and includes several articles that discuss its acidic properites.

I don't know what Coke does to Ti, But have you ever used it on bug guts on the windshield?
