Titanium based knife???

In the custom knife world, titanium handled knives have, obviously, taken off. What I want to know is what the price would be on a production knife made out of titanium. Like the liners, I would want titanium liners, rather than steel, to cut weight. How much more would it be to machine than steel? Not the titanium handles like the sebenza, just liners, and with something like G-10 micarta, or FRN slabs over that. The clip, screws and pivots would all be Titanium, so how much more would it cost to machine these parts out of titanium than steel?

I'm pretty sure nobody uses titanium screws or pivots. They would be too soft for the task. And I suspect if you harden them, they'll be too brittle.

I can understand wanting it for a completely waterproof folder, but it's just not practical.

I could be wrong though, as Warren Thomas sells some folders marketed as "all titanium". I just never heard it mentioned if he uses titanium screws as well.

Mission knives did a folder or two in titanium with no magnetic signature for EOD guys, etc. I'm not sure if they're even still around though.. :(

If I am understanding you correctly, you are looking for a knife with titanium liners, a steel blade, G10/FRN handles and titanium hardware. I know the boker Eskellibur fits that description. It's a great little knife.

Only certain alloys of titanium can only be hardened a few points on the Rockwell C scale and some can't be hardened at all. Even hardened ti is in the low 40's HRC and not nearly hard enough to be brittle. I would think fasteners could be made of Ti, they just probably won't be as smooth as a steel version if tight tolerances are used. Just a guess based on Ti's rougher surface and tendency to gall.

You will NEVER find a production with titanium screws, NEVER. It is too cost prohibitive. There are very few CUSTOM makers that do it.

I have a Tom Mayo Covert, that has titanium hardware & a stellite blade. It IS smooth as silk.

I'm pretty sure the Mission MPF-1 is 100% Titanium other than the washers which are nonmetalic. They are pretty expensive, but still production I think. They also make a version with A2 steel too, everything being Ti except the blade and washers.
I've heard Spyderco uses Ti for the clips on some of thier H1 folders. Emerson, and a others, use Ti for some of thier liners. But Mission is the only company I know of that uses Ti for screws and pivots.
