Titanium Coating Services

Oxide ? Do you mean nitride ? TiN is the gold colored and is commonly seen on drill bits....Some makers are using Tungsten DLC which is a black coating.

TiAlN (titanium Aluminum Nitride) is about 3000 Vickers and comes out a very nice anthracite grey black, deep red combo, depending on who does the treating. I've recently started offering it on my blades. I dont have any pics yet, but I like the look better than the deep black DLC. The performance is also great.

And you have it done where, Kevin? ...unless it's a secret, then we'll just have to hunt it down...;)

I have the blades done here in Germany, I doubt it would be cost effective to send blades over here. If you search in Google you should find someone who can do it in your area. I think Bodycoat in the USA may offer such services.

do you just send the whole finished blade (prior to sharpening)?

Yep, Kevin, a few months sittting in customs both ways just might slow it up... Thanks.

Fully sharpen and finish the blades prior to coating. The very thin coating will not make any difference in the function of folders.

The coating goes around the cutting edge so the sharpness feels less than a blank blade but it will last a long long time. You can resharpen the knives when you get them back or strop with diamond paste on a leather strap. The coating is harder than most normal sharpenening stones!

Customs wouldn't be a problem either way it's the postage that's tough to pay. I've never had a customer in the USA have to pay any duty at all on any merchandise they received. Coming this way it would be necessary to make sure the customs knew the parts were arriving for service and would be exported once they were done. Then there should be no duty or sales tax to pay. Sales tax here is already 16% and the genius politicos want to raise it to 18 or 20% soon.... when I rule the world things wil be different!

I'll be happy to send your blades in with mine. Cost is about $25 each, give or take depending on the size plus postage. I do think you can drum up somebody in the USA to do it for you. TiAlN is a common coating for "hard use" tooling in industrial applications. I'm having a bunch of milling cutters done now too. They tell me D2 works great when coated, no hardness loss at all.

Yep, here's few although getting all the dust spots off those dang dark blades is a real drag. :)

This pic is a small user I make called Avalon. The grips are alu 6082 T6 hard coated matt black, the blade is M2 HSS RC64. Lock is an inset Ti liner arm. I do all CNC programming and milling myself.

This pic is also a small knife, my model D1, blade is again M2 HSS with the TiAlN coating, bolsterrs are Damasteel and the grips are Bog Oak, 2mm Ti liners.

This last pic is my model F5 in an extra large version with a 4 inch blade of CPM S90V. Grips are contour milled from olive Micarta, 2mm Ti Liners.
