Titanium COATINGS: How do they hold up?

I don't know how much this applies to the knife industry as it doesn't seem to be in much use yet. I was planning to have some linerlocks, button locks, and guns Ti Carbonitride plated or TiAl plated. Does anyone have any experience with the results of these processes? I may have an Aluminum grip frame and steel slide done. Does it offer any degree of practical strength. Battering of the slide stop hole in the frame is a concern to me. Also, possible galling of the contact points in the knives and slide rails. Sorry to include guns in this discussion, but both are tools some of us are familiar with and the other gun forum didn't offer any answers about the topic.

It seems to me from what I've read that Ti plating and stock Ti have different hardness and wear properties. Anyone have any answers?

I have a swiss army watch made by wenger that is Titanium coated. Unfortunately its wearing through the caoting in a few places and is starting to look kind of ratty. YMMV.

Mike,

I've seen some watches w/ the coating. I wonder if the same process is used? From what I've heard, there are several processes for applying the Ti compounds. I'm not up on the technology enough to explain it well. I would guess that the watches and other "software" type applications use the less costly, lower temp applications.

Does anyone have knives or guns with the Ti finish? Dessert Eagle (Israeli Arms) finishes their pistols with it as an option. Buck Knives is one of the companies that uses a Ti compound called "Buck Coat". How about it guys? Are they holding up?
