any chance of a titanium bladed commander. one with steel screws or clip on it to be able to go through metal detectors?

Rumor has it, titanium Commanders will be offered soon. Possibly sometime in the next few months. Price is expected to be in the mid to high $200 range.

To answer your other questions, Emerson says there will be some new production knives coming in the near future. It is hard to say if he will borrow from his hand mades or not. the production knives are a good mix. The Raven did not have a handmade predecessor, The SpecWar did not have a handmade predecessor at least not a folder. The CQC-7 is self explanatory, the Commander came from the ES-1. La Griffe came from Fred Perrin hand mades. I am thinking the next new production will be a new or unknown design. We shall see.

Emerson seems to be very fond of ATS-34 and it's American counterpart. I don't think he will change steel in the near future. He has been using the same steel for a long time.

Can anyone else correct or fill in any blanks?

I made a mistake in my earlier post. i menat a titanium bladed knife with NO steel screws or Steel clip.

i spoke to Jason at Emersons and he stated that the titanuim commanders will have steel in the clip and fasteners. I pose the same question of a full titanium knife, but he said it would be very costly to produce.

memnoch,

Remember there is a difference between a
metal detector and a magnetometer. You can
set off metal detectors with Ti or other
non-ferrous metals... I believe there was
a discussion regarding the different types
of detectors awhile back (rec.knives).
Interesting technology. Magnetometers,
"metal detectors" and millimeter-wave
imaging were discussed.

I still definitely want a titanium commander. Will the blade have a Benchmade style carbide? coating or be more like the tempering of the Mission knives' folder. IF you do not mind Shannon, do you know the estimated price or time of delivery?

Jason and all who might be interested in a titanium Commander. I called to put my name on the list for one and received a mild surprise. The first run will be handmades by Ernie. There will be 250 made and will be available in approx. 3 months give or take. Total price is $1269.95 The production knife will be out in about 1 yr., price will be $265.

I think I'll be waiting until the production knife is available.

Dirk - Did you say ONE THOUSAND TWO HUNDRED SEVENTY DOLLARS?!? That sounds like a heck of a lot of money.

Also, if these are truly hand made by Erie, how in heaven is he going to make 250 in three months?

Just the blades are being hand ground by Ernest. Ernest can grind 25 blades a day so the grinding is doable in about a 2 week period - the rest of the knife is factory made but is hand finished and hand picked for assembly. Same situation as Microtech - special editions - hand ground blade - factory parts. Their special editions are going for up to $3,000.00.
