Titanium finish?

Hi all,
I am not a knife maker, but I do own a couple of titanium handled folders and was wondering how makers achieve that gray patina on the scales. I assume that is from a form of bead blasting. What types of media are used? I have one folder that is in need of refinishing. I have a friend that has loaned me the use of a blaster. At this point, any useful tips would be great!
Thanks in advance!

Hi Barry,

You have assumed correctly in that the gray patina is achieved through bead blasting. Unfortunately it is quite expensive for the media and small quantities are not so readily available (or if they are will someone please let me know!) so it's tough for the do it yourselfer to do this cheaply. You can try very fine grit silica available from building supply stores but the finish isn't quite as nice. Texas Knifemakers Supply offers bead blasting at a reasonable price.

One thing, if you do try it, be sure to NOT TOUCH the piece after blasting until you have sprayed and soaked it with a couple of coats of WD-40, letting it dry between coats. This will seal up the open pores of the steel or titanium after the blasting and help prevent lasting fingerprints and discoloration from future handling.
