Hi teamshoptalk!!!

I want to put some Ti scales on one of my folders, and i know i can get some ti from www.titanium-man.com, but im wondering, with my shop gear can i work the titanium to make these scales? I have a fast wood cutting bandsaw, a drill press, a handheld jigsaw, a quick cut chopsaw, regular chopsaws and i think thats about it, oh, and hacksaws. I also have a disc sander that i would use to profile. If i can cut and form ti into scales, can you tell me what method is best for me? If i cant, can someone here do it for me? I would send materials and a template of the origional scales, and i can put forth some cash (depending on how much).

TIA

If you have pure Ti it's no problem but the alloy Ti 6Al4V is tougher but it can be cut with a sharp hacksaw or files or or grinders.

Hey aaron!

Your bst bet probably would be to grind away what isn't a scale. Trace your lines, grind the profile with your disk sander, and do inside curves with a dremel-type tool, or drum sanding attachments in your press. You can polish the ti scales on the disk sander, changing the grits to as higha s you want to go (I hoep yours is modified with rubberized cork so you can quickly change the paper, using wet/dry paper).

Good luck!

I don't know if this wil work on the thicknesses you will be using, but for the thinner (0.040) that I use a dull, and I stress dull, bandsaw blade running fast cuts it very easily (6Al4V).
