Titanium La Griffe

I should have mine early next week. I understand it has the carbide coating on the back of the blade. This is the same as the titanium BM CQC-7. The idea was to help with edge retention. In my opinion, since the titanium La Griffe is more of a defensive tool, I would have prefered not coating and just make the edge razor sharp. My experience has been that you don't get quite as sharp an edge with the carbide coating.

I'll let you know when mine lands.

Dirk,

definitely write up a review. I'm eager to hear about it's weight and cutting ability.

I did a review and posted in the appropriate forum.

Short version, extremely light, rust proof, feels and handles the same as the steel model. Edge needs work.

I like it! If I can find out how to improve a carbide coated blade, I will love it!

Wait, the titanium LaGriffe wasn't handground by Emerson, I thought that was the point, a handmade neck knife.

It was $300!

I can't say how it was ground, but it is definetly from the production shop. The blade is not as precise as the other La Griffe's, so it could have been ground by hand. I am going to put a call in to the company and see if they can give me some details.

I do know that titanium costs more than most steel, it is harder to work and is harder on bits and belts. So when you by titanium knives, you are paying for the wear on equipment and the increase in time to work the metal.

I post what I find out when I call.

I just got of the phone with Emerson knives. I spoke to Carrie. She checked and said that Ernie did hand grind the titanium La Griffe. That coupled with the total cost of titanium gives you the $300 price tag.

Anyone curious about sharpening with the carbide coating, Emerson said that the carbide crystals were meant to do the cutting and that as you use the knife and the titanium wears away it will expose new carbide crystals.

I asked about the titanium Commander and was told Ernie will be hand grinding them as well. I am thinking he will be grinding all of the titanium knives that are coming out.

Dirk,

I'm glad that you checked that out. I can't wait for the Ti-Commanders.

Colin, I was going to call you, as you suggested. However, I went ahead and bought a DMT diamond rod and tried it on the titanium La Griffe. That was the way to go. I don't know why the ceramic stones wouldn't work by themselves. I used the DMT diamond rod and brought the edge in and the gave the edge a few very light strokes on the fine ceramic triangle. The edge is just shy being truly razor sharp. It takes hair of the arm, but there is still some drag in it. I have improved the edge to the best of my ability. as my sharpening skills improve, I might be able to get the edge even better. As it is, I am truly happy.

Jason, thanks for not taking me up on that offer I made. I like this La Griffe too much now that it has a real edge to it.

It looks like I'll have to get a titanium Commander now.

Dirk,

Sounds like you got that LaGriffe scary sharp.

I just got put on the list for a Ti Commander. I can't wait for it either.
