Titanium Nitride blade coating?

I've been playing with the idea of forged folder blades, but the trouble with carbon steel linner locks is that they are harder to keep clean and rust free with the thumb bob and such than a fixed blade. But I do like the performance and ease of sharpening.

I was browsing a site looking for a special order bullet mold and found out that they offer TI coating of reloading dies, and when I get in will call to find out if they can do knife blades.

My question is how well does TI coatings(gold will probably be the only color availible) work out and hold up?

I've been thinking of other coatings, what other than TI would hold up good on a folder blade?

Thanks

And i used to live under the impression that TiN (aka "TiNi", Titanium Nitride, ceramics) coating results in black finish. As in any of the Kershaw "BK" models for example (Kershaw Vapor 1640BK) You mentioned TiN in the subject and then totally switched over to titanium alone. As to how useful it is on HC blades, i'm sure somebody else will be able to tell you more. I've only ever seen it used on stainless blades for folders.

IIRC its pretty expensive but very resistant to wear. Maybe you could have just the pivot area done. Who knows it may act as a kind of bearing too.

Actualy it can be done in a varity of colors, not sure how, but what I'm refereing to is the gold colored ti coating used on drill bits and cutters, it's the hardest. They say they can do it at a low enough temp not to mess up most tempers, so I'll see when I call them. The price for coating the reloading dies are 35$, so it wouldn't be that bad, and I may be able to work out a lower price or trade if they'll do knife blades.

I believe thread title is slightly misleading then and might confuse somebody else too :) The titanium drill/reamer bit coating you're talking about definitely doesn't look anything like coarser TiN coating that is often used on blades.

Sorry for reviving an extremely old thread but I was wondering if you ever tried this?
I was just wondering myself if anyone is doing this with the same TiN coating as we've been seeing it on firearms a lot in recent years.

I believe Gough Customs uses DLC which is similar on his blades. I am considering sending one of mine out just to see how well it works. If anyone has any recommendations on where to send it I'd appreciate it!
