Hi, has anyone here tried titanium for a pivot pin in a folder? how do they hold up? do they wear, gual, stick or are they ok in use? I would use 6al4v
Thanks
Chad

I had one machined way back when but he is retired now. I bought titanium 2-56 screws for that one also and used nothing but titanium hardware on it when I built it. It was a rebuilt Spyderco Salt 1 with lignum scales, ti liners and hardware in the end with teflon washers to replace the PB and overall turned out fair. The idea was to make it just as resistant to rust as from the factory. The pocket clip and screws were titanium also of course.

I did use some grease in the pivot on the barrel and it worked smooth. Now if the lockbar was made of titanium I think you could expect it to be gritty at the least, maybe even more than this and rough. I've not tried and would pass on that idea. Otherwise it worked for me on the one I did but its the only one. It was 6AL4v ti. The whole folder was that everywhere that ti was used.

The only way I would consider using a Ti pivot is if a bushing is used. Ti isn't hard, about Rc 48 is all you can achieve. Heating and cooling it a few times with gain you some Ti Oxide, but that is a super thin surface oxide that will wear off quickly on a pivot application.

Even with hardened 416 pivots you will get wear on the pivot, which is why I use bushings on all my folders.

I wouldn't do it. Titanium tends to be "grippy" and will gall. I haven't tried one on a folder, but I have tried using them as pivots for equipment that I have worked on ~ didn't get the results I wanted. As stated, a bushing would help, but I would still pass.

Best wishes
Steve

Thanks everyone,

I think I will try and talk my customer out of it, but if not I will test the heck out of it before it leaves my hands

Thanks again

Chad,
If your bolsters are stainless, don't do Ti pivot pins...If the bolsters are Ti, think about hidden pins....

I have a bunch of Ti rod, but it isn't gonna be pivot pins on any slippies and would have to be some special request to be pivots (and with bushing) on a Ti bolsterd linerlock or backlock....if peened pins....

I don't remember why I got a bunch of the Ti rod material from a realistic point of view......other than Alpha had it so I bought it.... 416 is still the prime pivot pin material on a slippy, if 416 0r 410 SS bolsters, with, or without a bushing,
On a Linerlocked folder, SS is still a preferred pivot material.....unless "hidden" pivots aren't the case...

The only exception I would make on a slippy.....a Ti or Timascus bolstered knife would least show the pivot pin when peened pins.....but still not the least appealing pin....
