Titanium?

A good friend of mine has asked me to sharpen his titanium dive knife. I don't know anything about the alloy; I'm assuming it’s a titanium alloy. Are there any quarks to sharpening a titanium blade? Will it raise a burr like other knives? Will regular stones work or will I need something else? Anyway just thought I would ask as I have never worked with a titanium blade before.

Thanks.

O By the way the knife is a underwater kinetics blue tang titanium dive knife.

I did a quick google search and found the website of the manufacturer. You can download a PDF of the users manual. It says to just sharpen like you would a regular knife with stones or other methods used on regualar knives. It should be pretty easy since titanium is usually softer than most regular blade steels. Although this is some sort of alloy so i don't know for sure.

^^

I've only sharpened one titanium knife. It was a picnic knife.

I made the mistake of using "too much stone." :(

Try starting with 800 or 1000 grit. You can always go to a coarser grit if you need to, but I doubt you'll need to.

zaph1 made a titanium knife for his wife to use mushroom hunting. that was the first titanium knife i ever sharpened and it took me a while to work up a burr but i was using a 320 grit belt. i switched to a 400 grit belt and made a few passes before going to the slotted paper wheel to remve the burr. when i was done i was able to shave with the knife.

there are different grades of titanium out there and i would imagine not all will take a shaving sharp edge but his did.
i have a titanium jet engine turbine that i have been working on occasionally thinning it down so i can put an edge on it to what kind of edge it will take.
