I am thinking of upgrading the old VCR. What are your experieinces with TIVO vs DVR? Can you buy a DVR unit or do you have to rent them each month? Thanks.

I would personally go with one of the Tivo units that has a built in DVD recorder. This way you can record things easily through the Tivo, and if you want to keep them more permanently you can burn them to a DVD. I think it gives you the convinience of easy recording, the ability to automatically find all shows from a series from the Tivo, and unlimited space from the DVD recorder.

You can buy a stand-alone DVR which functions exactly as your VCR would, save that it uses a hard-drive instead of videotape. The Tivo (and similar units supplied by cable companies) have a feature which accesses the programming information directly, allowing you to pre-set, search for, or do various other things. Want to record a whole season of Law & Order? Press a button and forget about it.
This service isn't free, both Tivo and your cable/satelite service charge a monthly fee.

I have Tivo and my son has a cable provided dvr. He really prefers the Tivo for all the reasons mentioned above. Costs a little more per month, but it is so interactive and intuitive that it is probably worth it.

Been looking into Tivo--just trying to find out if they sell to Hawaii through their site (says "CONUS Only"). On the site the subscription is like $12.95 a month with a one year commit and they have a few different boxes. I was looking at the 80 hr box with DVD burner built in--that would be like $350 for the box and one year of service, which sounds good to me. The service allows you to set your DVR online, which is pretty cool.

We have Tivo. We tried the DVR offered by our cable company and went back to Tivo even though we had to pay more money each month.

Tivo has better features, a better menu system. I couldnt imagine watching tv without it.

i have DVR thru time warner cable, have really enjoyed it, rarely use my VCR anymore, the rewind on live TV rocks, great for football games, miss a play ya can roll it back, flipped my buds out the first time they saw that lol. it holds about 40 hours of stuff FWIW, costs like ~$6 a month, i really like it, in fact couldnt live without it anymore, love taping shows off history/discovery/etc in the AM & watching in the PM, ya can zip thru commercials, did i say i really like it??
