Hey guys,

I've been thinking about picking up a 3.5-4" knife for canoe camping and outdoor cooking. TJ Schwartz makes two very appealing looking knives, the Overlander and the Confidante. I was wondering if anyone here has one or both and could share their opinions about them?

I'm looking for something very stainless and I understand that TJ uses Magnacut for these and they are heat treated well. I like the look of both of them. The Confidante looks cooler to me and would sort of scratch the nessmuk itch I am currently experiencing. However, the Overlander looks a little bigger and maybe a little more robust? I can only add one to the collection right now, so I want to choose wisely. Whichever one I pick would be a companion to a big chopper. I usually carry my Busse BME2 or a Carothers SDFK for turning logs into fire.

What do you guys think?

I had an Overlander. I did not care for the handle at all. It's very small and thin and seemed like it was more for edc than doing a lot of work with. I ended up moving mine. Everything else was really nice. I just wasn't a huge fan of the handle.

Looking at the specs now, I can see that it looks about half an inch thick at the thickest point. Does that sound right? If so, that's a downside I didn't necessarily consider. Was it decently radiuses, at least?

Wanted one, handled one, changed my mind. Handle didn’t do it for me. I do like his archer folder tactile did. Similar style to his fixed blade designs but it works better for me in hand.

Sagandavis, how do you like that Polheim? I was considering one of those too, but they are a bit more money.

I have the overlander and overlander sport. I like them the handles are fairly thin but I have small hands and didn’t pick them up for heavy duty use. I think they work great as a edc or light use out doors knife that can do food prep well and some light camp chores.

Hmmm this Classic Freedom might be on my shortlist too. I just wish the default sheath was kydex. Decisions, decisions! Looks like the handle might be a bit more ergonomic too.

It comes with kydex if you get one with apocalyptic finish. There lifetime warranty also applies to their sheaths. I don’t think you’ll regret one

Actually there’s one on the exchange with both leather and kydex sheath

I have the confidante, i love it my hands aren’t that big so the knife just barely fits my hands. I use it for pretty much anything from food prep to slicing cardboard, one of my favorite mid sized fixed blades wouldn’t trade it for anything else.
