Very nice Brain. Are those mosaics or some sort of bolt ? I cant tell from the pic , how long is it also ? :) and that is real pretty wood.

those are mosaics. It has a 7 1/2"blade. Overall around 13.25" ... :)

Nice piece of walnut! Question, though... why leave that 1/2" or so in front of the ricasso soft like that? Is that just how it came out, or is there another reason?

it just came out that way. Its a longer and wide piece of steel so its WAY harder to maintain the heat on it. The LONG riccasso its a finger rest when choking up on the blade for close work. Most of the blade that it used will be the 3/4 of the blade from tip back so it will be fine. I thought it more inportant to make sure that the area I could controll had proper Heat treat and not fight what I couldnt contol because of the size. I could have blasted up the torch but that could have lead to a overly hot heat treat and I didnt want that either.

Its the small nuances that I like in hand made knives. Even though there from the same stock and same paterns I think ALL of my knives have been one of a kinds. Any larger than this blade size and she will be a full HTed blade.
