I've been getting into better craft beers lately, some of which have the caps covered in wax and are tricky to open (but glorious). I've been using an SAK but decided a TL-29 with bottle opener/screwdriver might give me more leverage. Who makes those, and any available for under $50? Happy to look for older models as well.

I'm not sure the TL-29 came or comes with a bottle opener. I know GEC do cap lifters in their #15 frame that look similar to a TL-29, the only other I could think of would be a TC "Beerlow" SFO which you might pick up off the exchange. Both of those are a bit above your budget though.

you might be able to cut the wax with the can opener first, and then use the bottle opener on your SAK. Other than that, maybe a Mauser or German army knife might work, with the long saw with an opener on the end.

(sorry for the large picture, it was pulled from the net)

The TL-29 does not come with a cap lifter. It was, after all, a Military electrician's knife. The design originated with the Army Signal Corp, and the term "TL-29" stands for TOOL, LINESMAN, 29

You might have seen a knife which had been modified into the configuration you seek. Or you might have seen some other knife, but it wasn't a TL-29.

I drink a few beers of this type, and the wax covering is messy. However, the cap underneath is just the same as any other crown cork. Because of the way it's placed at the end of the blade, the Mauser/GAK opener will give you more leverage, but I don't think that is really necessary. I'm currently using a Northfield Radio Jack, and I find it great for opening bottles.

Thanks mate, yeah I was pretty sure they didn't. I have one myself, though thanks for the knowledge, I didn't know what the TL stood for til now. Those that I pointed out to the OP were ones I figured were close to the body shape (if not overall size) of the TL-29.

Then again, being an army knife you'd figure they'd put in a cap lifter, never met an army boy who didn't drink! (Not true but close enough)

A pattern called a "Bartenders Knife" might be more what you're looking for. Most have a special blade made for cutting foil off of a wine bottle top. I'm sure that would cut wax from a beer bottle. They also have a corkscrew and usually a Spear Main Blade. And of course a caplifter. Try a Rough Rider for around $15. A very serviceable knife.

I use a swissbuck to open wine bottles. I cut the foil with the can opener first, and then use the bottle opener.

If you are handy, you could always mod your own from the screwdriver blade on a TL-29. This is one I did, they work quite well.
