Is it legal to conceal carry a knife of any length in TN? I know open carry is legal, but is concealed? I can't find any clear answers. I open carry a Ka-Bar, but I woould like to conceal if I have the option.

On July 1, 2014, Tennessee repealed all of it's knife-specific laws, including its ban on switchblades and ban on the carry of knives with blades over 4". Combined with the Preemption law passed the year prior, you effectively can carry any knife you want, concealed or openly. You can thank KnifeRights.org for that.

The relatively recent change in the law is why you are likely reading so much conflicting information online. Many websites and forum posts are out of date.

Not all.

- Still unlawful to carry any knife on school property, including college. (with very limited and generally non sequitur exceptions for the average person)

- Using a switchblade in a crime is a separate offense. So use a Bowie or something to knock over that Stop And Rob, eh?

- Posting law may still include knives, though is now grayer than before regarding that I guess.

So a Vic Classic on my keychain is breaking the law when I drop the kids off?

Does "school property" include the parking lot?

Obviously, there are nuances of law that are simply never enforced.

As far as dropping your kid off, there is a specific exception for:

" A person entering the property for the sole purpose of delivering or picking up passengers and who does not remove, utilize or allow to be removed or utilized any weapon from the vehicle."

Knife possession itself is of course handled very differently between grade school, high school, and college. Grade school: instant freakout. High School: generally strict but varies. College: near zero enforcement.

Thanks, forgot that part.
