While many may not understand my fascination with Tom Mayo's TNT, I think some of those whom I have dealt and traded with here might.

It was never a secret that I was VERY fickle when it came to folders.I could never find one I was satisfied with for ANY length of time. I used to buy or trade for a custom or production folder, carry it a few weeks {if that long} and find something I did not like about it.

Sometimes I would grow tired of it because it just was not exactly what I was looking for. The problem was, I did not know exactly what I was looking for!!!

I wanted a folder I could use for food preperation in the kitchen that allowed for easy cleaning and minimal care. I wanted a knife I could use at work to cut heavy duty plastic strapping.I wanted a knife that I could use for whatever chore might be required on my numerous treks through the woods with my sons {even though I carry a fixed on the jaunts}.

Well, you get the idea, I wanted an all around folder. I had actually carried small custom fixed blades quite satisfactorily for a while,
but they are not allowed at work.

You can guess by the title of the thread what I am leading up to here. Although I have said it before, I LOVE TNT"S!!! Before the TNT I had been fairly satisfied with sebenzas. I still say they are the best production {or semi-production, whatever you choose} folder out there. But inevitably I would go through these as well. I still could not find my Holy Grail.I had really become quite dissillusioned by my own inability to feel satisfied. Then I saw on a thread about sebenzas where Tom Mayo liked them. He said he even took them on trade sometimes. It did not take me long to hit his site, and low and behold, he had a small TNT available!!!

I had just acquired my {5th, I think} sebenza. A new small lefty. Well, Tom took it on a partial trade and thus began my TNT addiction. I have owned Talonite and Stellite blades by other prominent makers, some with long waiting lists. I always come back to the TNT.

I know this really sounds strange { I am beginning to worry about myself!}, but there was a short time a while back that I had no TNT, and I realized that after acquiring another, that was one reason I felt so melancholy. Stupid hunh!

Well, thanks for indulging me here. I hope others feel the same satisfaction when carrying their perfect folder. I probably went through about 100 different folders in two years { this is the time from when I found BF until my first TNT}.

Contentment is a nice feeling. All too elusive for me B.T.{Before Tom}

I just felt like repeating my feelings on TNTs. Anyone have anything to add?

Well 'zealot, I have something to add. I caught a glimpse of a TNT with Timascus. You think you've seen TNT's? Ha! You ain't seen nothing that compares to the Timascus. That thing absolutely blew me away! The guy that bought it followed Tom into Blade Show West. It makes all other TNT's pale by comparison. Yes the Holy Grail does exist as I have laid my eyes on it and the effect is positively hypnotic. It left me speechless. It's more expensive yes but worth every bit. I have one on order (sigh) since Feb. and was hoping to get it at the Blade Show. Well maybe in a couple months. No I don't have a picture of it but I saw it and it just took my breath away. Someday I will have one.:D    ;)

Hey Scott!!

I have seen the recent Timascus TNTs. Very cool.

By the way, I have #001 Timascus TNT:D It was bead blasted, but it's still # 1:D

Chuck Bybee, Bill Cotrell, and Tom Ferry are to be commended. Timascus is way cool.

He wasn't there. Neither were any of his TNTs by the time I got there Saturday afternoon. I've only seen one once, at Plaza Cutlery. I didn't have the cash at the time and don't use credit cards for buying knives. Besides that, it was a wharncliff blade and I still haven't managed to fall in love with that blade shape.

But still, holding it and opening it made a lasting impression. Then there's the Talonite part of the equation.

Anyone know why no one else works in Talonite besides Tom & Camillus?

Perhaps one day....

Darrel Ralph, Jason Jacks, Paul Reynolds, and Deryk Munroe come immediately to mind, if we're talking folders. I'm sure I'm forgetting plenty of other makers, no disrespect intended to any of them.

BladeZealot -

A lot of folks hear you and the story rings true for many. There are collectors for collection's sake; and there are collectors who are that by default - within the realm of searching. And, there's also a combination of the two.

I love my Sabenza so much that I want to take the dive and get into a Mayo TNT - Talonite 'n Titanium. I know that others use Talonite, but I have beautiful knife examples from many of them; but no TNT.

I've taken to collecting TNT pictures from various net sources so that I can get it straight in my mind as to what's been done. This is assuming that I'll have to order one custom and get on line; want to know that it's a design I will enjoy. Maybe even will order two or more (thinking how blown away I will have been at the first one that showed up) - especally need to order as I would prefer LEFTY TNTs.

I hear about size differentials. As a guide for me and others, what are some of Tom's size names and the relative blade length / OAL?

Re: I went to Balde West Looking for Tom

I talked to Tom last night. He was definitely at Blade Show West. Tom told me that he sold all of his Blade Show West knives in the first hour of the show on Friday morning. Fortunately, he has additional knives available for the BAKCA Show this weekend. The Bay Area Knife Collectors Association show is this weekend in Palo Alto. From the sounds of it, if you want a TNT get there early!

Tom was at Blade Show West all three days. He was hanging with the Buck/Strider guys at their booth. If you want a TNT, get to the show way early (like a couple hours before the show) and follow Tom in. Or you can put your name on the waiting list. As far as blade lengths go, they vary by how Tom feels that day.:D   ;)

Also Simonich who started it all (althou he doesn't take any more custom orders.....:() and Rinaldi who was second I think, also Kit Carson, Neil Blackwood, ...............

Sorry, been at work all day.

The thickness of materials {blade, handle material}increase as you go up each size.

The only constants in each size are the material thicknesses.

Each Blade is hand ground by Tom, so there will naturally be some variation.

Therefore, each of the following are approximations.

Small-2.75 inch blade, overall around 6.25-6.5
medium-3.25 inch blade, 7.5 overall
large-3.75 inch blade, 8.5 overall
x large-4.25 inch blade, 9. overall

Beefy TNT-I think they are usually 4.75 inch blade, not sure, because I have not discussed these with Tom much.

If he was at the Strider booth, I might have looked at him and not known who it was. Nobody at the Strider booth seemed interested in talking to customers. I went by a couple times and they seemed more content with regaling each other with wild tales than talking to a potential buyer.

Bladezealot, i am unconvinced of TNT quality, so far I think they are junk.
Perhaps you can arrange a "pass around" with one of your TNT's?!!!!! I need to see for myself :p
"Doubting" Martin:)

Hey all,

I was fortunate enough to get to the show a half hour early friday morning. I was able to get in early only because Mr. Mayo had sent me vip passes.

Well, I got in there and frantically looked around for Mr. Mayo's table. I actually asked a few other makers where he was. I recieved a few looks but no info. Finally I found him and his table in the corner surrounded by a group of about seven people.

I had to fight to get three of the ten knives he had brought to the show in front of me and I smacked hands away while I made my choice. What I came up with is what Tom said is a knife he has only made about 5 of.

The knife had all the makings of a large knife including thickness and length of titanium scales. The difference was that the blade length was only 3 1/2". It is just the perfect size and I must say that I really like the feel of this knife. I am not sure what I am going to do with it. Should I carry it, save it, use it? I dont know.

I was just so glad to be able to afford to get one and glad to be able to carry it.

This is a great country!

Thanks and be safe,

Mike

" Thanks Mick
That's kind of what I thought.

Damn sorry I missed that Mayo guy."

That's pretty much a class response.
Regards,
Greg

DAMN you have a GOOD memory man;) Talonite was born as a knife material right here on Bladeforums! Simonich and I were working on the first Talonite blades at the same time, his was done a few weeks before mine:( BUT being the SMART SOB that Rob is, he scored the exclusive deal for obtaining the stuff.. THAT guys is ALWAYS thinking! These forums have been AWESOME for the knife world!!

Actually, Kit Carson, Mike Franklin, Jim Jacks, myself, and a couple of other guys have been using Stellite 6K for almost 20 years. Stellite was invented back in the '20s by some guy name Hayes. It is not new, and Talonite is a copyrighted name for Stellite 6B, which is VERY close to Stellite 6K. And sorry you couldnt find me, you should have looked in the sports bar!!!!

I was watching the ball game with my buds!
