To acid wash, or not to acid wash?

Hello fellow BladeForums members,

I recently acquired one of the Kershawguy limited edition Kershaw Junkyard Dog II's with the black DLC blade. I currently have it sent off to a custom maker/modifier from here on the forums, ready to customize it. I already plan to have carbon fiber scales made for it, but I am trying to decide if I should have it acid washed. On aesthetics, I'm all for it, but in my pondering, I came across a question to determine my choice. Will having the clip and liners, most importantly, the lockbar liner, acid washed affect the lockup of the knife? In theory, if the acid is corroding the top layer of the metal, it would eat away part of the lockbar face and cause it to lock up later. Has anyone who's done this noticed any such effect?

Thank you!
Thomas

If you put fingernail polish on the lock face and any other critical contact areas ( to stop the acid from etching those areas) you should not have any problems.

That's a great idea; I'll definitely discuss that with the gentleman modifying the knife. Thanks for helping me to be able to have it acid washed, flatblackcapo!

Sounds like a cool idea. Depending on how it comes out, I may do this to my DLC JYD!

I think it'd be cooler if you stonewashed the DLC. Leave the acid washing for the blems.

That does sound like a great idea, but after seeing the DLC in person, I am going to keep that part stock. I'm planning to have the clip and liners acid washed, which, as the gentleman customizing it so kindly suggested, should compliment carbon fiber scales quite nicely.

You are very welcome, tc. I do look forward to seeing it when you get all done. Have a good one.

Just browsing here. But if this is the guy who sent me the JYD II... We can acid/stonewash the blade and liners. I would rather polish the screws to have it pop off of the scales.
But nothing will be effected from anything I do. In fact action and lock up will only be improved if possible. However the DLC blade is kind on nice.

Hey, it coincidentally is. I really like your idea to acid wash the liners; I'm just concerned about it causing a later lockup and wanted to do some research before deciding on it. If you're able to maintain the current lockup, or even make it a tad earlier, I'm all for acid washing the liners! The polished screws also seem like a great idea! I would certainly like to keep the blade stock DLC, though, since that is what makes it the limited run, and I do enjoy the subtle aesthetics. I look forward to discussing it further in depth tomorrow.

OK,
have fun on the forums brother. I know I am. Fried chicken and country music awards. How is that for a rock fan.
Talk to you soon,
I will just buzz you.
Matt
