Why did you pick the AR over the GB?

I've got to decide and I know the AR has gotten rave reviews. I also sharpen my own knifes and know that the maintenance and sharpening of the main tanto edge (GB) is easier to use with a hone guide. BUT the AR seems to be the overwhelming favorite.

This will help me decide on my third Strider...

 ;) :p

Hondo,

I've owned both and between the two, I like the AR better. It's not that one is superior to the other or anything like that; both are great, heavy duty folders and either would be a fine choice.

Here's why I like the AR better. I just don't like the American tanto-style blades anymore. The American tanto style blade used to be my favorite. It looks very dramatic, especially in the hollow-ground versions They are probably better for scraping, for tip strength, and penetration, but I don't use the knife for those purposes on a daily basis. Perhaps for a fighting knife, you would want the American tanto-style blade. I like the spear-point, more traditional blade shape of the AR. It is great at slicing and push-cutting due to the edge curvature and geometry.

Both are easy to sharpen, You just have to sharpen the secondary bevel on the tanto so it might take a little longer.

I really like the handles of the GB and AR. It is thick, you get a handful of a knife, and it really is very heavy duty. I guess that is how it is with all striders.

Still waiting for AR from TAD. I just prefer a spear point. LEO's seem a little less leary of a regular blade and I don't think Tantos are legal in NYC. But then not much is legal in NYC or NJ. EC

Personally I like the AR for it blade shape. It's got better utility than the GB IMHO.

Get which ever one you like better. Like the rest of us you'll eventually get the other knife as well.

Sidewinder - you're probably right about starting my own Strider collection. When I got the S-2001 I looked at my other knives and knew it was time to do some house cleaning...

;)

Shortly after the Sep attacks I finally got around to tracking down Strider knives that I saw in a magazine article over the summer. I finally got through on the phone to a Strider rep who said he had some unmarked S-2001s and I pulled the trigger on the order that same day. So I guess I was lucky.

So I guess I was lucky

No, you were destined to get that knife. I believe that the Striders you get choose you, not the other way around. I got my AR that way. When everybody wanted one, this one just kinda appeared...

Yeah - destiny can be a good thing. It would have been tough to deal with the anticipation if I had to wait a month or two.

I know what you guys mean. They must choose youI decided to get a GB for my first Strider and was looking in the forums (in fact that's how I found the forums) and got kind of bummed out because it looked like it was going to be a long wait for one. Then on the first "knives for sale" page I looked on, found one new for sale and bought it right away. I just got it yesterday. I love it!!! If you guysa ever get a chance to do business with Dr. Spine, I recommend it. Hew was great, and everything was perfectly as he said, and shipped quickly.

You are right, I want an AR now too. but I'm ordering an MT today :p
