Thank you so much for the warm reception. Looks like I found myself a new family!

For those of you who wanted to know here is the order:

- One 18" WWII (Wood Handle)
- One 18" Sirupati. I wanted wood handle but it was not available...so I defered to Uncle Bill's experience. I have had (poor quality) knifes in the past with horn handle, and they all cracked or brittled. One major mistake I made when ordering: I did not remember HI iron-clad warranty. That alone should have taken care of my worries not to mention that the Horn of a Buffalo must be prettty thick to be able to carve a handle.

As for sanity (or the need to have as littleas possible to survive this world)...no worries! Being originaly French, I am genetically deficient in that field!

Living in this great country is what keeps me afloat.[I am now a proud US citizen]. As I told Uncle Bill: French by Birth, American by choice! ( check my profile)

I talked again to Uncle Bill again today and we shared quite a few laughs about the byzantine business concepts that we both experienced dealing with far away countries but the great news is that my knifes are being shipped tomorrow. Can't wait to have them....

Two already

As for the horn handles, Walosi posted something about that awhile ago. Find yourself a grain and feed store and buy a product for dried cracked hooves. Something with high lanolin content.

Eventually I'll leave the "Big Smoke" to go get some of this stuff. I've been using some boot waterproofing paste that has lanolin in it in the meantime.

Welcome,

The stuff you want is called hoof flex. A tub will likely last a life time for khukuri care. Unless you have a horse to go with the khukuri.

Pierre, I am in West Chester. Right next door, we have to meet up and compare khuks.

Two Khuks already ! Gee, Have to wait till January for my next one. Welcome to the Cantina Mon ami!

I think Pierre is going to be a steady. A Frenchman turned American by his own choice has got to be a pretty good guy!

Welcome to the Cantina Pierre!!:D

I think you made the right choice on the wood handles--not because of anything to do with HI's guarantee(which IS ironclad, yet flexible in the customer's favor:) ), but because I'm not sure that hooflex alone will "prevent" cracking, but more likely will reduce frequency that it occurs and/or severity of the cracks. Kind of like handle insurance I guess. The wood gives a better grip when slippery with the blood of your enemies too;) :D Besides, I keep my horn khuks covered in lanolin when in storage, and cleaning that gunk off everytime I want to use them is a pain (to me anyway). Why do I always keep them covered? Cause they ALL cracked when I moved from Maui to Maine. Fall came and I didn't have them protected when the humidity dropped, and they all did it:( (Humidity around these parts changes constantly. Today is raining and foggy, and 3 days ago it was cold and dry).

Its not a major job to fix them with epoxy though, and as others will tell you, once they crack and are fixed this way they are unlikely to crack again:).

Again, welcome! :)

Over the years I've seen customer preference change from horn to wood but some still insist on the horn.
