To barter or not to barter.

After reading so many threads on bartering and for years have been building up supplies to barter with myself, I am now totally re-thinking my stand on this matter.

I see where some people have no qualms about taking what you have in order for their survival. They freely state it now when they or there loved ones life is not on the line. So would bartering hang a sign around your neck that says "I have something that you need to survive".

Would we be safer to just lay low until calamity has passed?

As much as I would like to help people in need, how safe will we be when a gang hears that you "have stuff".

Whats your thoughts?

"Walk softly and carry a big stick." I just keep what I have and don't have to myself. My friends can sometimes get in on the deal, but these things are not for the 'general populace' to know.

Many folks' moral structure seems to evaporate when things get hot.

I agree. Look at what happened to people during Katrina

be very cautious! maybe deal only with people that you know & trust & are like minded! or dont do it!

Your right about that Tim, but the phrase "loose lips sinks ships" comes to mind. When a gun is pointed at your head it might be pretty easy to say where you got the supplies from.

BTW, What part of Georgia are you from? I'm from Middle Georgia myself.

Hey Spook, you may be on to something, it never occurred to me to keep you needs (IE. weaknesses) to yourself.

Just the kind of input I am looking for.

Your posts brings up 2 issues.

1. Not everyone is going to have everything they need. Bartering will not be a premeditated thought. Building a strong community is the best option to solve this. If you think about it, a community probably came into existence for the exact reason of your post.

2. There will be people who will try to remove you of your supplies, regardless if you advertise or not. This is where not trading ammo is a smart idea and planning defensively.

Your thread has been relived since time immemorial!

Building a strong community, now that is something I would be willing to do.

I have a hard time letting the guy behind me in line for groceries know that I got a 10# sack of Russetts on sale, you think I am going to openly trade with people if TSHTF?

No.

Its been stated before in no uncertain terms that in the event of calamity the barter system is a sketchy proposition at best. Especially in the absence of law. This sounds kind of funny but I would be more than happy to check in on the GBU on these boards to find credible , like minded folk that are down to trade.

fear grips every one and makes people scared to stand up and help others ,fear of getting involved....if i help him what may become of me for helping ...down fall of communities, town and restoring what just collapsed.we can come together trade or work for items needed and slowly rebuild and stand up for each other instead of hiding in a hole waiting for the goverment to come and tell you it is ok....i will defend my family and my neighbor as well...

I'm just happy to live in a highly defensive position. Living in a canyon with only three major entrances is nice.

I'm fortunate to live in a community with neighbors I actually know. I'd hate to be in a big city during a disaster.

"where ... trading ammo is a smart idea and planning defensively. "

Always be willing to give ammo or trade it. haha.

I would put my vote in to keep your things to yourself and lay low. If you are lucky enough to live far away from big cities, you have an advantage right there, but if not, I wouldn't be one for having a bar-b-q in the middle of a packed neighborhood with hungry people nearby. You wouldn't want to barter off valuable goods, especially if you don't know how long the SHTF is going to last.

With the H1N5 virus looming things could shut down for quite a while. Interstate travel will shut down first then you will not be able to travel from county to county, with the army and guard tyring to stop the spread.
