To a town to which I had never before been-
I was contacted last week by a chap I know from the Wollongong Vikings Rugby Club- Golden Oldies "Longhorns".
The mission he put forward was a journey to Boorawa* NSW to pick up a scrum tackling machine from an engineering firm.
I have driven the mini bus on their annual trip away to the south coast for the last 10 years so I was first cab off the rank with the request.
Could I drive him out to Boorawa* near Cootamundra** with a trailer to take delivery of this machine?
Of course when are we going?
Tomorrow!
No lets go Monday.
OK .
We picked up the the hire trailer at 0730 and embarked on the 4hr drive to Boorawa.
Stopping at the small City of Goulburn for coffee. Thence an unecessary diversion through the town of Yass*** and through the countryside to Boorawa.
Boorawa is a small picturesque town with not much going on .
Arriving at the engineering firm on the outskirts of town my interest was piqued by the store attached to the workshop.
It sold farming equipment, spares ,guns, scopes and ammo and outdoorsy stuff. There was a magnificent stuffed hyena and a massive buffalo head mounted above the counter.
While they talked to my companion (who is 83) I was in there scoping the place for knives -expecting only to see the usual run o the mill selection of Chinese and Taiwanese hunting knives and maaaybe a couple of Opinels.
That's sadly about as exotic as it gets round here.
In the cabinet were a couple of large Svord pigstickers, Some Case knives and 3 Bear & Sons stockmans. There were others of good quality too
I could not believe it- this was rarity to me.
There were staglon, a wood and a stagbone handled stockman.
In an uncontrolled burst of passion I flung my credit shuriken style at the guy behind the counter ,it whizzed past his face missing by by inches ,continued its trajectory over the eftpos machine depositing the funds as it went, then like Marine Boys boomerang it fastened its self back into my wallet with a confident click.
The guys had loaded the tackling machine on to the trailer, We tied it down and headed to Boorawa pub for a counter lunch.
I had the superb Boorawa Burger which was so huge it was likely made from the remains of the buffalo back at the store.
Then we headed home , arriving safely at our destination around 1800 hrs.
A good days work made better by actually buying a USA made traditional stockman knife in an actual shop from an actual person-I tell ya that doesn't happen very often down here.:)

* Boorawa -pronounce the "oo" as in book or look and the "wa" wuh as in when someone says something and you aren't listening.

** Cootamundra -pronounonce "Coot a Mundra":)

*** Yass- do not look at the sign that tells you McDonalds Yass is open 24hrs- that's the one with a big golden M . It is the most ill conceived sign anywhere.

It's interesting that you found some from Bear & Sons. I have never seen any for sale in a regular store, only online.

That stockman looks pretty nice, my local hardware store had some bear & son's in the case and they don't look too bad.

Good find.

By the way, how has Svord's Ned Kelley Toothpick (more like a mason's trowel to me) gone over in Australia?

Dr. Livingston I presume?
Amazing what you find in remote areas of the planet!
Congratulations on your find, Meako! Where can I get one of those amazing credit cards??
:D

Nice! I was up in Coota the other day. Didn't luck into any old knives though.

Nice find mate. I think opinel or maybe puma knives are about as good as I can find in any local stores!!

It's been about 17 years since I was last at Yass (because you can't drive straight through apparently ). I remember it being at once a beacon of neon, actual other people who I hadn't been trapped in a car with for 8 hours and bad but necessary coffee, and the kind of truck stop hellhole you could find yourself stuck in for decades if you're not wary.

I'm jealous that you found a random shop selling quality slipjoints.

Star Trek always bothered me with splitting the infinitive. "Boldly to go" or "To go boldly" but not "To boldly go".

English class is over.

Nice find Meako.

Good find.

By the way, how has Svord's Ned Kelley Toothpick (more like a mason's trowel to me) gone over in Australia?

SP, I've never seen a Svord Toothpick down here, either in bush camps or in a collection.

I've never seen any genuine Ned Kelly related edgeware either, but I suppose the people of that area and time might have used simple jackknives or Sheffield trade knife type patterns.

Thats it Jake -and I reckon it had been in there since 2009. cheers.

Chris -the freeway glides right past Yass now -my 83 year old compadre was navigating so we did the 20min detour. Pretty little place and the coffee would be real nowdays.

Roo -yeah there were some Pumas in the cabinet too- I actually don't think I got a bargain or anything but it was worth the just under a ton to buy the thing in person- that never happens.

Charlie you need to contact the commonwealth bank -the more you spend the more they want to extend your credit limit-I call the dingo in a maternity ward principal of financial management.
happily i did this one with my own money so strategic high command will never know-I just need to live like a hermit for a week or so.
cheers.
Notably this adventure took place in the heart of bushranger country.

Its hard to say about the Svord ned kelly-didn't even know it existed-the fact that I had to go to Boorawa and by sheer luck alone found something other than opinel SAK ,muela and excaliburs pretty much says it all.
I'd be interested to see the Ned Kelly though.
