Nothing special here, just went out yesterday with the intention of an overnighter but ended up cutting it short. Because of that the only interesting pictures I got were of the firebuilding process, figured I'd put them up here for folks to take a gander at.

First things first: Carry firewood over the ankle-deep water that is about everywhere from the melting snow. Avoid places where the frost is going out and the mud is about that deep also.

Now find some dead trees and turn them into firewood.

Pick a straight grained round and split it up into eighths or so with the axe, then use either the axe or a knife (I used the knife this time) to make kindling and shavings for a one-stick style fire setup.

R/B, anytime you can get out is a good time. I agree with everyone else, that last shot needs to be a wall hanger somewhere . . .
Thanks for inviting us along.
Be safe.

its soo damn refreshing to see a fire started with a good old bic. its nice to know im not the only guy who uses a lighter somtimes

My Bic starts *far* more fires than my firesteel. Call me a bad survivalist but I just want a dang fire.

i agree i like practicing but when i want a fire the zippo comes out to play and when its time for a bon fire gasoline and my tru flares work even better!

I went out last weekend to do a little 4 wheeling. Had planned to wheel out and have a picnic lunch next to a camp fire. Well...the fire thing never happened! The wind was easily gusting to 30. Snow everywhere. I had dryer lint and a bic, but couldn't get the flames to lick anything more than the tinder. So I just hunkered down in my coat and ate my cold sandwich.

At least I had my peppermint schnapps laced cocoa to make things a little warmer.

Yesterday i made a fire with a butane lighter.
Wood was abundant but my firekit wasn't. Good thing i carried my new HEST Folder and one of my my scouts had a lighter. It made the curls and kindling and a hour later it was searing hot :)
