To buy in Nepal?

Hi there,

I’m new to this forum. Maybe you can help me with a little problem.

Years ago (1980 actually) while I was in Nepal I bought a military model khukuri. I felt in love with it. Unfortunately I owned it only for a few days…
It was confiscated by the Customs at the Airport in Rome. They said I needed a permit from the Police to take it away. That would have implied at least a day of work lost (I was living in Florence at the time) plus the bureaucratic hassle and the money for the train. I had to renounce but I still missed it.

NOW I live in Amman, Jordan and a friend will stop here for a day on his way back from Nepal to Italy. He is willing to buy a khuk for me.
I do not want to order it by mail because I’m afraid local Customs could make some problems too, while travelling inside a luggage with a group of foreign tourists in transit through Amman should be much safer. ;) I’ll take the risk.

I e-mailed Uncle Bill to know if it is possible to buy directly one of HI items in Nepal.
I got an answer from Yangdu, instead, saying that "because of the current political situation in Nepal our shop is closed to any visitor."
So, what is your advice? Shall I go for one of the Khukuri House models?
The reviews I read about the latter aren’t very satisfying, though.
Is there a place in Katmandu where one safely can buy a high quality model? I ‘d like a BAS.

Thanks

I don't know the answer to your question I am afraid, but why wouldn't you consider just buying it from Uncle Bill himself and having it shipped to you. I know that it would cost more that way but you would be guaranteed the best Khurk in the world. Just curious. Good luck.

I'll second Mark's question: if you're going to order from someone, why not make it from the best?

It’s not a matter of money. It’s the almost sure bureaucratic hassle: we are speaking about mailing a weapon, not a lollypop. As I said, travelling inside a checked-in luggage of a tourist in transit should be much better, I hope.

After my bad experience with Customs in my country I’m not willing to risk again, especially with Customs here in the M.E. You don’t know how much of a pain in the… hum, neck they can be.
You are lucky in the USA. You e-mail your order and just wait for the home delivery.

It was clear to me that it wasn't a matter of money. In your original post, you asked: "Shall I go for one of the Khukuri House models?". Based on that, I had assumed that you would be ordering from them, hence my statement. If it's possible to buy directly from them in a Nepal store, then my comment doesn't apply, obviously.

Best of luck on your quest.

I would be more than happy to buy directly (I mean send my friend in person with cash in his hands) from H. I., but their shop is closed!

My only hope is that my friend’s tour will bring him to visit a good Kami.
Otherwise I’ll send him to the "Nepalese Khukuri House" shop, in lack of other advice.
