To buy SPS2 or not... Need to discuss with more "level-headed" people.

For a couple of days already I'm in two (three, actually, minds) about one situation.
Recently I got "addicted" to "Metal Gear Solid" games series. Finished first MGS, and on the edge of dealing with second one. "Ok", -- I thought, "I'll get an SPS2 emulator, and try MGS 3. Will buy an official version to compensate for emulation part.". Ha. As I managed to understand -- there is no such beast as fine working SPS2 Emulator for PC. And won't be around for a couple of years at least.

My first reaction was "F..., I'll get this SPS2 -- I's about MGS, after all!!" But morinig is wiser then evening, so I ended with following arguments.

1) The main problem is not in money, but in "time-space continuum":) I'd need to share a TV set with parents, and I remember since NES days (long-gone childhood) that it can be quite frustrating.
2) SPS2 has a quite a number of worthy games never published on PC. But... I do not have same chances to play for a few hours every day as I used to. So... having two gaming platforms (SPS + PC) feels abit over the top.
3) Maybe I should wait for SPS3? I'd pe pricier, off course, but I'd get get a cool console, with possibility to run older SPS2 games...

This is my trilemma (like dilemma, but with 3 solutions) --
A)"Get over it", and read about next MGS in wikidedia.
B) Get SPS2 now. Life is too short, after all...
C) Wait for SPS3...

I do not ask for a quick and simple solution. Rather... can we talk this over?

Thanks beforehand!

edited to add: Do not want to put it on any "on-topic" gaming forum -- know all the replies too well...

Personally I would wait for the ps3. It will be out soon, and MGS3 will be the same now as it was then. But you will have all the advantages of the new system. In the meantime I would maybe sugest saving to get a separate tv. im not sure about prices in Moscow, but in the states you can get a basic 27" - 36" CRT t.v. for under 200.00.

Good luck in your decision.

Emulation never works as well as the original systems, unless the games themselves are really old and have few requirements. Furthermore, playing any stealth game with a computer keyboard is a precarious engagement.

There are many compelling reasons to get a PS2, with one being their fairly low price at the moment. Don't forget that you can also get MGS2: Substance and the similarly expanded MGS3: Subsistence for it.

There are also a ton of other great games available for the PS2, an advantage that neither the Xbox nor Gamecube possess.

Buying a Playstation three would cost multiple times as much as a 2, and it might be subject to all sorts of bugs and problems upon its release. I'd get the PS2 as well.

PS2 emulators won't be stable for years.

Wait until the PS3 comes out then buy a PS2 at the dramatically reduced price, as it will then be a "last generatin" counsel. Then wait a year or two until the PS3's price lowers a bit and they have worked out the initial bugs.

Nobody suggested "Getting over it" Good -- the whole idea is apparently not to crazy:) .

Were the SPS2 release bugs serious? Need it as a comparition point to know what to expect.

I just like the idea of getting "three consoles at one"...

Sony and Microsoft are both known for shipping faulty hardware at console launches.

Sony's PSP initially shipped with many dead pixels on the screen and a few firmware issues.

The XBox came with atrocious DVD drives, froze often, overheated etc.

The PS1 had a strong tendancy to overheart during normal usage.

The PS2 had many DVD playback issues and problems with the disc reading laser in general, sometimes resulting in damaged discs.

The XBox 360 has probably had more hardware problems than any other console to date.

The PS3 will be one of the most complex systems to date, it's bound to have its share of problems.

If you want a stable console, buy something from Nintendo. :-P

Get the PSP.

Might also consider a DS if you do decide on a portable. Cheaper and has many innovative, quality titles.

Depending on your monitor, it should be possible to hook up a console to output video to it instead of a TV. You may need an extra adaptor and cables, but it would be easier to take care of than warping space-time to free up the TV.

You may also want to check out Deus Ex on the PC while you mull things over for another great stealth action title (just stay far away from the godawful sequel). It's a few years old now, but still unique in its approach to gameplay.

Thanks for your time and help. I think I found the best decision -- to wait abit. Time is on my side -- I'll ether get SPS2 cheaper than now? or -- something shining new -- depending on price and discovered bugs:) .

Never ever thought about PSP. Is it a full-powered gaming system (on par with PC or SPS), or a mean to survive time untill getting to one:) . Not shure that I have a need for additional portable game system...

Switching it to monitor whould definitely be a good idea... Never heard of this feature -- Thanks!!

And Deus Ex... It was really good.

SPS2 can be had for very little money (comparatively) if you shop around a little bit. We have a chain of stores around here called Game X Change where you can get all the different consoles for a great price. They are used, but they run all of them at least half an hour before purchasing them and have a good exchange policy if the system doesn't work once you get it home and start playing with it. I bought an N64 and PS2 from them and was happy with both, even though I am not much of a video game person. Don't have either console now, as I am just not a big video game fanatic.
