To carry or not to carry, that is my question

Just rec. a nib Mt CMTX-5. Asoltutely a gorgeous tool. Very high quality of fit and finish to say the least. Rec. this from Andrew and am extremely pleased. However as we all know here I am partial to EKI knives for edc. Especially the 7 and Commander series. This MT blows them out of the proverbial water with the attention to detail. The thing is, and I am not used to owning a knife as nice as this, I am leery of carrying it for fear of scratching it. Never thought I would say that but sad to say it is true.

Don't get me wrong I have owned knives as nice as this just not in a good long while. Last was a Sebbie that again just couldn't bring myself to use it. I got this MT for such a good price though I am really really tempted to start edc'ing it as I like it that much. I am not that much of a collector although I do have a large collection of knives. All users save for this MT. What to do what to do. Advice is appreciated to make me feel better about using the snot out of it. thanks and keepem sharp

well, I would be happy to use it for you, that way you won't have to feel guilty about it, I won't even charge you for the service :D :p

Go outside and drop it in the dirt and cut a few boxes open and you will feel better. C'mon dude you have a first rate cutting tool that is built to last you a lifetime. Don't let it go to waste. If you keep it perfect for years then you will have left out on the joy of using such a knife. If you saw the Sebbie I am EDC'ing right now you would think I am crazy, but that is what the damn thing was made for. Live a little and enjoy it. :D It would be like handing me a Vette Z-06 and asking me not to roast the tires off the rims. :p OK Pep talk over.

I don't think you will every full appreciate a knife unless you use and carry it. I you don't use it they might as well have used "surgical stainless" for the blade instead of ATS-34, or what not.

Just my $0.02 of course.

Just buy another, then you'll have a spare. :D

If you're not comfortable carrying it, it's just a paperweight. I can't imagine leaving my Amphibian in a drawer out of concern it might get scratched or damaged, but if it does I know I have a spare on hand if necessary.

Plus, if you get a slight variation for your spare, you can argue it's just different enough not to be completely redundant. Knife Knut rationalization. ;)

Of course, then your spare becomes a safe queen, so you have to rotate it into your EDC once inawhile, but it keeps me entertained.

Use it! If you want, also carry a low-cost 'beater' in case something really nasty comes up.

I carry a MicroTech L.C.C. for my main EDC and a Leatherman Charge for the nasty stuff.

I recently picked up an NIB MT LCC such as I had lusted after when they were available new from MicroTech. I got it for a fair price and I had some pangs about using it and getting it scratched as using it will do. But I do not buy knives to store them away in a drawer, so I am having great pleasure carrying and using that knife whenever I can do so legally.

I can sympathize not wanting to use your new gem but that's what it was made for :)
I've bought three Spyder's this year , the first one I carry and use a little , the other two I still havent used , I guess I'm waiting till my "beater" Gerber takes its final poop before I make that plunge.
hehe.

I agree with everything everyone has said. It is in my pocket for the next good while. We'll see how it works out. keepem sharp and thanks for advice :D

This reminds me of people who buy a high end performance car; Vette, Porsche, etc. and then put 500 miles a year on it, only taking it out on one of those absolutley perfect days.

Me, I've owned both, and believe me I think a car is for driving. I feel the same about knives, though I must admit, the most expensive knife I own is a BM that I paid $ 169 for. But, even if I had one of the $ 400 Sebenzas everyone raves about, it would get used.

They don't do anyone any good in a drawer and I don't know a soul who would visit us and would get all jacked up looking at my knives. In fact, I would probably get a couple of wierd looks, whilst the wife rolls her eyes. If you bought a $ 300 Milwaukee Hammer Driver, would you keep it locked up in the basement?

Use the knife!
