Newbie Question here! My wife just purchased me a nice Case Texas Mini-toothpick with a Damascus blade. I was told by a shop that i should put it away and not carry it daily because case only produced a small run of these and the case damascus blades or hard to come by. Is this true? or should i just drop it in the pocket and enjoy it.

Thanks,
Colt

Hello,

After all it is a knife,,,what you have to deside is if it having a Damascus blade makes it Collectable an then if your willing to Use a collectable blade. Just because it is Damascus doesnt make it collectable, maybe for a case knife but not in general.

I think your wife probably bought it for you to enjoy. if your Enjoyment comes from using a nice pocket knife then by all means use it. ( and care for it properly)

If you get your enjoyment from Fondling and looking at it , and keeping it in like new condition then dont use it.

Also if its a collectable and you keep it only for its collectable value,do not sharpen it, leave it as factory sharpened or its collector/value drops slightly.

Anyway thats my opinion

There are several of these for sale right now on www.ebay.com so its collectability is not as high as the shop wants you to think. Of course they would tell you that because they want to sell you another knife to carry.

I say use it and enjoy it.
Of course I come from the why buy a knife unless of course you plan to use it crowd.

Colt,
I have a Case, Stockman, Damascus blades and Stag scales. I don't feel the need to use, but I think if you want to, that's fine. I just thought it would be a nice addition to my collection. If I carry it, it's in a pouch and just to show someone. I didn't like the way the factory finished the edge, I had to touch it up. I don't think I ruined the knife, I just couldn't leave it the way it was. They were a limited run, but certainly not rare. Whatever you decide, is fine, don't sweat it.

Carry it! Use it! To me, that's half or more of the fun in having a really great piece. (Most) Knives are Not investments. I Never buy anything worrying about what its resale value might be. And if you are reasonably careful while you use it, you won't add too many 'personal history' marks. As Phil said, you don't have to use it hard. I just love it when someone sees me with one of my knives and starts admiring it and asking what it is and where it came from. Even people who are afraid of knives can admire a beautifully worked knife. Most folks have never seen or heard of damascus. And you will help educate folks at the same time. Enjoy it!

Thanks to all who have replied. My new Knife has given up the box and know rest in the pocket!

Colt,
I just received a knife today, from Bruce Voyles. It's a Parker Edwards 5" lockback, damascus and stag, made in 1985 for the American Blade Collectors Association, cost $50. Orignally I was considering a Buck #110, from the Custom Shop, stag and damascus, for over $100. This was going to go right into my Stag display. Inspired by your decision, and other posts here, I'm going to make it one of my daily weekend carry knives. Hey, why not?

Thanks Colt.

P.S. You may find something you like at this site, go to avaiable now for sale, lots of stuff, in every price point. Enjoy.

good choice.
If you keep it until you die, who cares if value is affected? Your heirs?
If you resell it later, you're in trouble with the wife anyway. What's a few bucks then?
I have some nice handmade customs, some over the $500 mark and one currently worth $1K, I've used every one of them- proudly.
When I'm gone, they can cuss me for using 'em.

Colt,
There's lots of things, that would be worse to get hooked on. Glad you saw something you liked.

JW,
When my father passed, I got all his knives. All pocketknives, none expensive, all used but well cared for. There's this one little pen knife, I like to just hold in my hand, when things aren't working out, and think what he would say. It just let's me kind of touch him. in a way I never could if he had just kept it in a box.

PhilL,
That's called "soul"
The best knives have it.
I know just what you mean.
My Dad had a nice pocket knife with his initials engraved in the bolster. I gave it to my nephew after dad died- he needed it more than I did. Someday, maybe he'll get my Grandpa's old Marble's Ideal, but I'm not through with it yet. And yes, I use it too, on occaision.
