To Convex or not Convex, that is the question

I was wondering if it is a good idea to convex a knife with D2 steel. I am biased. I know if it was a carbon steel like 1084, 1095, 01, or A2, I would. Due to the fact that D2 steel is hard, is it a good idea? I would be using my knife for batoning, cutting boxes, cutting leather, and general utility. Thx

Definitely convex it, the convexed edge can get very sharp and have great edge retention.

I would say yes. Convex edge has good strength and sharpens well, very well suited to batoning, etc.. I convex VG-10 and SGPS all the time so your D2 should convex very nicely.

I convexed my D2 Sodbuster. Sure, it took a long time, but it's so much better now. As time goes on, it will only get an even better profile...I left room for improvement. Go for it.

i would convex it also. i made a knife from d2 for james todd that i put a chisel grind on and when its done it will have a half convex edge. i put a convex edge on a kershaw outcast for macgregor22 thats made from d2 and its wicked sharp. i have a couple of outcasts on the way to convex the edges on.

I have no experience with a convex edge.

That's actually my first chisel edge knife, most in my collection are V edge or double ground.

Once you go convex you will do it to all your knives. Damn few ever go back from a convex edge. I convex all my knives now.
