hello together,

in summer 2012 a good customer offered to me an ebony-grip with a fantastically carved sabertooth-skull at the rear.

whether I´d like to create a free designed knife for him???
of course I wanted-
and had no plan, what to do....but at least a lot of time for brainstorming: deadline was summer 2013.
finally I got the idea to combine the hunter with his aggressive teeth and the game, a herbivorous animal-
the whole thing packed into a halfintegralknife.

a roughly finished blade (thought for another project) matched the grip and its lines perfectly:

then came the ´3D-forming-stage´:

and finally the ´knifemaking-stage´.
for an old dental engineer it was a new experience to carve the skull out of the massive material.
but I wanted to do it ´the hard way´and not by wax-modelling and casting:

WICKED!!! Gerhard, everything about this is right up my alley...perfect mixture of sculpture and no BS blade design to my mind. I LOVE IT!

Wieland is just beyond belief.

It's an adventure each time we see a new knife from this artist!

I went to my first German knifeshow last weekend and was fortunate enough to see several of Gerhard's knives on his table. And though the photos do a great job of showing the artistry contained in his work, one really has to see the knives in three dimensions to truly appreciate their style and form. Two dimensions just aren't enough to contain them.

That's all kinds of impressive carving on both ends! Dental engineer, huh? That explains a lot. :) No wonder you're so skilled at the carving side of things.

That is absolutely breathtaking. What an amazing work of art.
Thank you for sharing.

Just love your blade profile, and the hamon. Carving, and leatherwork is very beautiful as well.

Such a cool concept....and,of course, flawless execution of the details.

Flow is beautiful, and even the sheath and stud continue the lines
