Here is a 7 1/2" hunter of 440C with 416 front and rear bolsters the inset is mammoth tooth with gold pins. Now the question is" should I get it engraved or not" and if so who should do the engraving?
Thanks for your opinions and comments are always welcome.

It's pretty busy looking now. Perhaps something small on the bolsters.

The file work appears to be pretty heavy and I believe it would compete with. and maybe overpower the engraving and make the whole thing too busy. The pattern of the mammoth tooth also is a factor which turns me away from engraving.

I like what Paul said. With the file work and the mammoth tooth there is a lot going on if you did engraving it would have to be small. with that said it would be a very nice design for engraving. lose the file work maybe put a small clip on the blade some simple scales and have Tom Ferry do the engraving. just a thought.

Was the knife not initially designed to be engraved?
It looks to me as it was considering the proportionately large bolsters. Or perhaps it was designed so as to utilize the smaller mammoth tooth.

I couldn't decide on the poll as I would say "yes it needs engraving" and "no, it is OK as is".

As others have mentioned and IMO the issue is the heavy filework possibly not complementing the engraving. However, I don't think it too difficult to come up with an engraving design that works with the filework to take this piece to the next level. However as I assume cost is a factor here as well, the safe bet may be to leave it as is.

It will certainly be interesting to see how this one pans out.

I don't think there is a DEFINITIVE answer to that question. That choice would be the personal preference of the owner.

The knife has a LOT of canvas to work with. When viewing ANY object that has been engraved, the question I typically ask myself: does the engraving enhance the beauty of the object?

If done well (and there are various factors that come into play) the answer to that question should be unquestionably YES.

After considering most of the above views on the subject,
all of them good and legitimate opinions, I think that
the final decision will be that of the owner when holding
the folder in his hand.

His personal taste and how the knife fits in with the rest of
his collection become factors of importance at that moment...

All the best,

With those large bolsters, I would go with a pattern that's not to "busy". I think it will add to the look of that beauty:thumbup:
