To flick or not to flick?

I have seen a lot of videos by knife reviewers who seem to be addicted to flicking knives open, and talk about which knives have the fastest deployment. I myself have flicked knives open, and want my knives to open smoothly, This being said however, I find it annoying when, you can't open a knife slowly. It seems to me, that a combination of the shape and positioning of the thumb stud and the strength of the detent make some knives fly open even when you're not trying. This to me is annoying. I want to be able to flick it open quickly when I want to, but there are times, in public places when I don't want to draw attention to myself when I am using my knife. I have a few flippers and assisted opening knives, and they are fine, and I carry them sometimes, but mostly I carry a Sage or Para 2, that I can deploy fast, or slowly. There is a knife shop I frequent, and I don't know how many times I've looked at a knife i liked the looks of and the salesmen would have to give instructions on which direction you push with your thumb,"Straight forward," "Straight up on another," "45 degree angle on this other." Come on!, its a knife, this shouldn't be this complicated! Has anyone else been annoyed by this?

If you're able to use both hands then you can open just about any knife slowly. This is what I normally do in public.

If you need instruction on how to open a knife...
anyways, most folders can open slowly(or halfway) even with a hard detent based on how you push with your thumb. takes a little practice,

I don't flick my knives. It's not like we're on a timer and I don't want to put unnecesary stress on an expensive folder. But that's just me..

Different people different taste, you can't expect everyone to cater to your liking. There's a reason why there are so many varieties. I personally like how each of my knives open differently whether I have to flick it differently or something. It gives the knife personality. If they all open the same then there's no point in keeping some of them.

I always flick. I never use anything more than the slightest wrist action, though. I flick with the nail of my thumb, get it on the bottom of the stud and flick forward.
