To have and to hold, from this day forward

It seems that wives... I mean knives... come and go, and I understand that's the nature of the hobby, but do you have any in your collection that you know you won't part with?

I have three and they belonged to my father - that's the only reason I won't part with them (a huge Kabar hunting folder, a "hobo" with fork, knife and spoon with his name engraved on the shield, and a Puukko).

I've owned a couple of very nice modern folders but, lacking sentimental attachment and representing significant coinage, I sold them. I might keep my Slysz Bowie and Beer Scout. The Slysz for its design and now relative rarity and the Beer Scout because it's fun popping bottle caps off beer with it.

I'm sure this thread's a retread, but I figured I'd float the question to anyone who might want to comment.

You may now kiss your knife.

I used to think so, then I sold them! :D
I do not have any that have sentimental value, and as I get older I actually think about dumping them all. Someone will have to sell them sooner or later. :(

Well, Dave, you're in a better position to sell them than anyone who might receive your estate. This kind of decision eventually comes to us all.

I have one from each last grandfather and two from my late father that are going nowhere.
Some others are subject to change but most are highly unlikely.

GEC Washington Jack. I hated this knife when I first got it. It was a bear trap to open! Very disappointed when it first arrived because I couldn't get the thing open. Fast forward a few years... it was with me when my son was born, and during his lengthy stay in the ICU. It currently has the best action out of my traditional knives. I will never part with it because of the history we shared.

GEC 78 black micarta - Christmas gift. I will keep this one forever. It's a user from someone that means a lot to me so it's staying.

SAK cadet - had since a kid. Beat up, tip broken, looks like I tried to sharpen it on the driveway. One of the first knives I remember owning so I will keep this one just for that reason alone.

CRK mnandi - ease of carrying. I could keep this one forever because I don't think I could replace it with something that would work as well for me.

I have a few that I won't sell, that I would like to pass on to my children, grandchildren or friends, someday.

-- The Craftsman folder I got from my Dad.
-- The Swiss Army Knife my Mom gave me.
-- GEC Scout Proto that I won in a GAW here on Bladeforums

Those are the only ones I can think of, off the top of my head. There are quite a few more that I want to hold on to for a long time, but as has been noted, you can't take them with you.

Two from my wife's grandfathers, a Boker USA bone 4 blade congress, and a Boker red bone small stockman.

Here are some knives / objects of sentimental value as well as forum gifts I'd never get rid of.

The yellow classic is from my grandfather / grandmother.
The knife was my grandmother's and the scales from my grandfather's that was always in his pocket.
The schrade my grandfather sent my father for christmas while he was in the army.
The Buck 110 was my highschool graduation gift.

the rest were essentially gifts from forum friends, Gaw or otherwise.

The case BSA half whittler was from a memorial GAW in honor of a members brother who owned a scout knife, Case learned about the GAW and generously sent him a few of these to giveaway.
The kindness and generosity adds something special to the knife, on top of how much I just plain like it as a knife.

In general though I don't plan on ever selling any of my knives, not that they have much value.

My ZDP Endura. The knife itself holds no irreplaceable value, but the scales are custom and have both my clan(Duncan) motto, Disce Pati, and my son's birth date engraved into them. The only reason it'll have left my possession is because it was passed down to him.

I might keep my Slysz Bowie . The Slysz for its design and now relative rarity.

I sold two NIB Slysz Bowies. I just bought another and "HOPE" to hang onto it. I have a BM 755 MPR, that is a sleif~R$#^ , but it's a gift from my older son so it will stay. I have some nice knives, but I've been here long enuf to know that I don't hang onto any of them very long.

Rather than gush on and on about one made in Golden with funny light green transparent scales and M4 steel I will say : I probably won't give up any of my knives, at a very rough guess 100 knives, I have never counted them. Some I like to have . . . some I like to hold . . . a few I even carry and one or two I am never without.

I'm working off the theory (that I just made up) that if a ghost is a ghost because it has unfinished business then most of my knives will be so pissed at me for not using them more that their ghosts will follow me around and haunt me if I keep the knives 'till the end. ;)

My 1979 Buck 119 that I carried everywhere during many years of service.
It has seen more places and dank cargo holds than I ever wanted to see.
This one is coming with me.

I have a few that I will never part with......
The Gerber BMF that I carried on my web gear every day during Desert Shield/Storm.
A vintage Ka-Bar given to me by a friend.
A Randall Model 14 that I bought for my daughter.
A Bark River Bravo 1 that soothes my soul.
A hollow handle survival knife I bought in 1986....the first knife I ever purchased.
A 1940's Italian "Humpback" switchblade given to me by a friend.

Only one is a Kabar "J Bowie" that my Dad bought new about 50 years ago.
That said, I think my current collection will prove to be quite sticky. I've spent a lot of time browsing, buying and selling. My tastes would have to change dramatically for me to sell off many knives.

I’m not parting with any of them...EVER!

(I’m still in the hoarding phase of this hobby)

My wife and kids bought me a yellow Spyderco Pacific Salt and a Ladybug Hawkbill Salt for Christmas, so I wouldn’t feel right selling them. Great knifes that will be used a lot around the lake anyways...

I've got a few. My grandfather's Leatherman that he carried for 30 years, my first knife (Vic Huntsman) because it was a present from my grandmother, a Benchmade Adamas because it was my first knife over $100 and I've sold it 3 times but have tracked it down each time. Other than that, my ZT 0600 because I'm deeply in love with it, and maybe my Shirogorov 95T for the same reason. Everything else is expendable
