Well, I heard a LOT of very good things about Spyderco customer service, and I have an old GIN-1 Stainless Steel Serrated Police that might use some fixing. I got it second-hand, and here are the issues at hand:

1. Some noticeable blade play (both vertical and horizontal). Enough to make a clicking sound when you do it horizontally (sides of handle hitting blade). This is by far the major issue.

2. Rounded tip and dulled serration points. Previous owner must have used a flat stone or something. I got it plenty sharp, but it's nothing compared to my out-of-the-box Harpy.

3. And here's the major problem: previous owner tried to sharpen up the swedge (dull fake edge on top of the blade, like on native), and failed. So now the swedge is BADLY scratched, rounded to a convex-like grind and is still quite dull. Would Spyderco people even touch this thing?

So, based on description above, should I send it in, or keep it as it is? Nothing wrong with it really, still my most-used knife.

Any Thoughts?

Thanks!:D

I don't think I'd send it in, but I'd:

1. Lightly tap the pivot-pin with a light hammer & flat-bottomed pin-punch 'till the blade tightens-up. (Take it slowly, check your progress often, and have a solid base to lay the knife on while doing the tapping.).

2. Re-sharpen it the best that you can using a Spyderco Sharpmaker or one of the Lansky sharpeners that are made for the Spyderco serrations.

3. Take some wet/dry sandpaper of grits from 200 up to 1000 to remove the scratches on the blade swedge.

You could always call Mike at Spyderco Warranty and Repair (1-800-828-1925) and ask him about what they could do for you. From personal experience, I know that Mike is great to deal with and that Spyderco's warranty and repair service is second to none!

If someone from spyderco does not reply to the post I would give them a call to see what they would say.

I'm would think they would not want someone to be unhappy with any spyderco, even if it is second hand.

For the little bit of time and money it would take for spyderco to repair that knife (if it can be repaired?)I would think it would be worth it to them.

If you do call or send it in to spyderco please keep us updated.

I have never heard anything bad about spyderco's.

I think they are great!

That is the best thing to do. I have a used GIN-1 Native, that I bought secondhand, and had some problems with the serrated edge being worn down pretty bad(due to poor sharpening). The serrations were almost flat!!!

I called Mike and explained the situation and he informed me that they could regrind the serrated edge portion of the blade at a cost of only $5!!!! Needless to say, my Native was sent in a flash back to Spyderco, with a money order of only $10(5 for return shipping, and 5 for the regrind). About a week later, I got my Native back and hardly recognized it. They did an EXCELLENT job with it and returned it to me in like new condition. I had to look at it twice, to make sure that it was my old Native. ;)

Give Mike a call, he will do his best to help you out. Reasons like this are what set Spyderco apart from other knife companies. IMO, they have the BEST Customer Service out there!! :D

Thanks for the feedback guys. I think I will try to contact the customer service department and see what they say as soon as my schedule is not as hectic as now. I will certainly post the success story if I send it in.

Thanks Again!

P.S. I am by no means unhappy with the knife. It served at least two people for many many years, and it held up beautifully compared to many other knives I've had. Go Spyderco. :D

Vess is actually a generic name the whole family uses when we register someplace and don't want our real names to show. V.e.s.s are the first initials of 4 people. :D
Thanks for Asking! :)
