I have been posting in blade forums for a short while, but I have yet to post in the Survival region...I was thinking this is strange because the whole reason is I am into knives is that since I was a kid, I have been a survival and camping junky. I regret to say, I havn't found the time to go out in a while (years) on any real campouts. But all your pics have been making me jones it pretty bad, well, I think I'll just have to go. I saw a thread a while back about your 3 tools that you would like to have with you when the S.hits the fan. It got me thinking, why not show some of my collection, and let you guys tell me what combo and why. I have a few pics of my stuff, and a pic of what I would bring if given the chance. I like all my knives and gear, so you won't hurt my feelings, as this is just to see some of your "expert" opinions. In the pic with my choices, I have a SAK that (forget the name) I think is the best choice because the blade locks, and the saw (big plus). The small fixed blade is the Bark River "Slither" with Fire stick in tow. And the big guy is the KC3 from Kelsey Creek. I threw in my High-Gear survival wistle, it has a compass that works, a mirror, flashlight, magnifying glass. Also, a gerber multi tool. Well, let the lesson begin, if you can't ID the large fixed blades in the sheaths, I'll help out. Gene:D

I was in SAR as a kid but haven't been camping in 10 years or so. So I'm with you and am jonesing for some clear weather. :D I like your 3. If I had to pick JUST 3 I would go with a Gerber axe, HRLM, and Leatherman Wave. Ones I own. Thanks for the pics.

What kinda of area are you in?

If you have lots of vegitaion, a large knife (machete) your SAK, and a medium fixed like you hrlm, but if you in the sticks :D take out that machete and put in an axe.

I live in TX right now, but I grew up in the North East....I miss the woods, everything down here is private freekin property, or a state park, where I have been told, if you park your car or truck over night, it will be broken into. I am looking very hard for a place to go and explore. I would have thought that a place a large as TX would have some remote places, but I havn't had any luck. I am looking for a cool small axe, that I would carry.

Look at what Gerber, Fiskars, Gransfur Bruks and wetterlings have to offer, they make some nice, compact hatchetes for hard use.

Check out the Big Thicket National Preserve in eastern Texas. I haven't been there in years, but you used to be able to get a camping permit (was free) and camp anywhere on the preserve.

Thanks, I'll look into that for sure. So nobody really wants to get into what, why, why not? I guess it's already been figured out...lol. Well I was thinking that the conversation could get good, having a restricted number of knives(the ones in the photo's) to discuss. ;)

I guess the thing is that you've got so many good quality knives there that any combo of SAK and fixed blade you take into the wilderness will work well.

Seeing as you have a range of very capable tools to choose from, I think the more important thing to be concerned with before heading into any remote areas is developing some good survival skills. The most important of these are basic first aid (resucitation, treating fractures, open and bleeding wounds, burns), land navigation, shelter construction, fire making, water collection, and basic signalling. Without at least basic skills in these areas, the best knife or combination of knives will not be much help in a survival situation.

I get that alot...just because I don't carry water and wear wooden clogs into the desert, I still read Angiers book.:D I guess I was just having fun with the knife 3 way or 4 way. It's more fun for me than it should be I guess. Thanks for the tips guys, Gene

Thats the biggest thing, have fun. Dont over load, take what you need and have fun :D

Big Thicket
Davy Crockett
Sam Houston
Angelina
Sabine

All are National Forests Geno & all in E Texas..........thick piney woods, swampy areas, lots o' skeeters, & plenty humid.

I told you this before dude............................

charliecan'tswim , your my savior....lol. I can't wait to get an earful tomorrow. I agree, Dr. Bill, we need to get out there and do some hardcore hiking and see this big badass state. I am still saving for the BOSS school, maybe next year.....maybe Chuckthelandluver will even come, we may need to bring some beer and darts though. :D
Edit: Barny, I have a weakness for those darn oldschool Gerbers...I could never get one as a kid, so I'm making up for it, I keep looking at them and saying that I'll never use them, I think it will have to go out on my first TX jont into the woods(not counting all the klicks I did on Ft Hood)

I think you picked a Nice Group already, although, I would have chosen the one left of the slither in the pick or maby the chris Reeve just because I love his Knives.

For the bigun I think alot depends on how far you are going and what you are going do once you get there, I agree with the hatchet idea, but a big knife may be better for diging out firewood in areas with alot of mesquite

You have some great choices their, I say carry them all for the first few trips That will build up you endurance :D  (or kill you)

You've got some real nice gear, you could grab and go with any combo of them really. I really like that Kelsey Creek, gotta get me one of those pretty soon!

I highly recomend the KC3...it is the nicest BIG knife I've ever owned. I can't see how they convexed the whole damn thing without any orange peal or divets in the finish, I mean you can check your hair in the mirror with this guy.
and the handle, although a little short for my taste, fits my hand perfectly. If you have small hands I think this knife would get hard to handle after a while though, the handle is short and stout, takes a good grip to hold onto for any length of time. Thanks for all the "nice gear comments" ....thats all I really wanted from the start..:D :D
