To much knife for the job?

Are there any of you with high end knives that maybe don't make it into the EDC rotation, but maybe see some light use around the house? I had to chuckle the other day when I was using my Al Mar SERE 2000 to open mail. It never made it into my EDC rotation, I maybe carried it for one or two days. So now it sits in the desk, but I find it makes a good letter opener due to the thin front portion of the blade, so it may become my letter opener, and a pricey letter opener at that.

So who uses a high end knife, capable of demanding tasks, for something not so demanding? :)

For those who think it's a sin to use a SERE 2000 for such a wimpy task, I have a lot of mail to open. :)

perhaps my 710 falls in this category. since i use my 806d2 and an m16-12z at work, i only carry my 710 at home or on the weekends. it never usually cuts more than plastic bags, mail, you know.. light stuff.

i could probably get by using my old Leek for it, but i just can't get over how comfy the 710 is.

Nope, not me. I use my large TNT just about every day for whatever I need. I guess I baby it just a bit because I have a special knife just for work, where I cut up tons of boxes and stuff. But that is really just to prevent damage as I can be rough on them, and don't want to worry about loaning a it out. And you never know when you might find a staple hiding out in some packing material just waiting to chip the nice edge of the talonite in my TNT. :D

I use my Chris Reeve Project I as a letter opener during the week, but it gets to go outside to play on weekends.

It's about as far from high end as one can get, but I use an Ontario USAF survival knife when doing landscaping work around the yard, and not much else. This has become the sacrificial knife for abusive tasks to which I won't subject nicer knives.

I cut up strawberries for ice cream toppings with my Busse NO-e. I'd have started with something a bit more fitting, but my off hand was messed up and I really couldn't do anything more vigorous.

Me, and I think a lot of others. I remember a while back the thread where Sal asked us basically how we used our knives. IIRC, a lot of answers included things like cutting up cardboard, rope, string, opening packages, but also things like opening mail, and cleaning fingernails.

I open mail every day with whatever knife I'm carrying. That's right, I use some heavy duty knife like the 710HS or Manix, etc. to perform the lowly task of zipping open the daily half-dozen credit card offers and occassional bill. Shoot, I look forward to doing it. I like the way a sharp knife sails through the paper. I'm not an outdoorsman, so I'm not out in the field skinning elk or batonning wood.

The knives I carry are way overbuilt for the tasks I use them for most frequently. But I like them that way, and I'm prepared for the heavier cutting tasks when they come up.

I used to carry some crappy knives around until I got my Kershaw Blackout, now I use it for everything, although nothing too demanding. I also just picked up an Opinel #8 but I haven't used it for much yet. I find the serrated edge on the Blackout works better for opening letters, also for cutting off clothing tags. I've actually found the serrated bit works well for what would normally need scisors. I'm probably using it for less than it's capable of, but I've also put a nick in the blade, so it's definitely seeing use.

i haven't used my SERE2000 for much since I got it but I do carry it everyday. I don't find it uncomfortable, maybe I'm just used to it. I am careful where I use it, it can be a little scary to some people..................... :)

So far, my 806D2 hasn't seen much action other than opening mail. However, I just feel more secure carrying my AFCK in my line of work, than if I was just carrying a smaller blade like a Calypso Jr..

"Better to have and not need, than to need and not have."

BTW, no offense to the Jr....I own two of 'em, one that I carry for home EDC. :D

I cook with my Ka-Bar. Not that it's a high end knife, but it's too big to carry. I've been known to strap it to my belt while I'm cooking (I keep it in an old , cheap Kydex sheath while cooking, so I don't get goo in the nice leather sheath).

I'm brutal on knives, I use my EDC (Kershaw Vapor II) as a crowbar sometimes and other than a few scratches, it's held up to some major abuse.

I've carved apples, opened mail, and deanimated many a pizza box with my KA-BAR.

It hangs out lashed to my bed, ready in a half second, but since it was 'only' $50 it gets some more beating around than my benchmades do.
