My condolences to all our English soccer fans. I'm a big supporter of the Premiership and was pulling hard for your guys to make it through to the semis. Man, was I disappointed (and pissed off) by today's performance. Lampard couldn't hit the water from a boat, Beckham was crying on the sidelines because he's out of shape, Shrek and others were whiffing on open goal shots from the six yard box, Shrek later went brain dead and got himself ejected, and I won't even go into the horrendous penalty kick fiasco. What a shame. With the early departure of Brazil and Argentina, the stage was set for England to make a serious run at recapturing the glory of 1966. Can I assume a good "bollocks" is appropriate at this juncture? :)

I'll just copy my post from the W&C thread on the world cup (don't worry, no foul language):

First, let me say that England obviously has the best league in the world, no doubt about that. Bayern Munich and maybe (just maybe) Werder Bremen would be the only German teams who could hope to compete with the best five Premiership teams. Also, you've always had some of the best individual players in the world. And you probably have the most dedicated supporters in the world.

That being said...

To be honest, I have no idea why England is constantly expected to win the world cup.

Your best appearance at a world cup tournament in the past 36 years (after you won the cup) was a fourth place, in 1990.

To be one of the "usual suspects" in international soccer, you have to be on or near the top consistently, for decades IMO. That's why I consider Brazil (4 finals played since 1970), Germany (4), Argentina (3) and Italy (3) the favorites every time, by default.
To me, England (like France, Spain, Portugal, and the Netherlands) is among the "second line" of favorites.

I do not mean to sound condescending in the least, and I'll be the first to admit that, for example, Germany's appearance in the final in 2002 was based almost solely on an outstanding goalie plus heaps of luck and that we've rarely ever played well anyway, just efficient most of the time.
But English supporters simply expect too much, if you ask me. Take the pressure off your squad and they may well get their act together and play like a team when push comes to shove - and win another world cup.

Fair comment, I think, Q.S, I think that we do put pressure on them to perform miracles on the pitch, last night was dreadful but we'll be back.:D

in France we don't put pressure on our team... as we were surprised they managed to go up to 1/8..:D
They managed to win against Spain which was a big surprise for all of us.
defeating Brazil was more or less a miracle !
So for sure we don't put them any pressure, thinking we are dreaming and awaiting to wake up !
