...dat be my question. I have a beautifully engraved damascus folder by a fine maker(AKI member) and am contemplating selling it to aquire 3 or 4 knives by "Arizona makers". This was my original plan for a collection, since I live in Tucson, but have gone astray over the years since there are too many nice knives around.
What do you collectors think of this move? I have never sold a knife since I began collecting though I know many of you do. Your opinions please. I don't want to be sorry later. Thanks nuts, Kevin

Severtecher,

If you keep all the knives that you have, it makes it hard to justify getting more, right?
Unless you LOVE the AKI member's knife, moving it along should not be that painful.
1. I keep the knives that I love
2. The ones that were MADE for me.
3. The ones that I know I will have a hard time getting again McBurnette, Gaston, ........
If you are done collecting knives, you are done. Until that time, even with the wealthiest of collectors, something has to move.

Regards,

STeven Garsson

Arizona makers, eh? Hopefully, you have Tim Hancock on your short list.

Danbo, I scored big there. Got a Hancock damascus/mammoth ivory gents folder from FrankDL here last August.
Steve, there is the problem, i love all my knives, sort of like it was a sickness :D but of course that's impossible. This is not the kind of knife you see for sale. Hmmm... thanks for the input. Anyone else got 2c ?

I had to go away and think about this.

You can only sell it once, but you can keep it forever. If you sell it, you will spend the money on another knife, which you may not end up keeping, either. If you don't sell it, you will find a way to buy that next knife anyway, and then you'll have both.

If it's a really fine collector's item, you're better off holding it until the day comes when you can make an advantageous trade. Money is only money.

In my experience, once a particular knife in my collection becomes the subject of a possible sale or trade..it eventually is sold or traded, but maybe not right away.

I am of the opinion that you should hold onto that knife, at least for a bit. It sounds like a really nice item, perhaps one that's not so easily replaced. As Esav said, money is only money and you'll eventually come up with enough for the Arizona maker's collection. The knife in question, though, will not come again. I say, hold onto that knife, at least for now.

Like Esav said, you can only sell it once. Might want to hold on to it for a bit. You can always make more money, it's only paper. I'd think long and hard about this move.

No Prob. Now, while you're feeling all warm and fuzzy, got any user Severtech's ya don't need?

It all comes down to preference. if you do not mind parting with it. Also if you stand to come out on top. Personaly I have traded, sold knive soff that I still regret!!! its all up to you. Me I like to hold onto what I ahve. Some, I will trade if they are ones Im not too attached too. Mostly the ones I regret are the ones that meant something to me, given to me, etc.

wetdog, there are no used Severtechs that one doesn't need. :D The Severtech machine should be in service after the new year, so the story goes. There is a LH model for sale here on the forums.

I have been fighting a similiar battle in my mind lately. In my case it happens to be should I sell my Sebenza to help pay for the DDR EDC I have on order. Now I have a few months to decide still. At the moment I pretty much feel that selling the Sebenza is no big deal, as it is just a large regular, easy enough to replace if I ever feel like it. I don't really carry or use it after getting my TNT, and feel I will get more use out of the EDC.

But in your situation I don't know. It seems that the knife would be hard to replace if you decide later that you really wanted it as part of your collection. I guess it also depends on what you want out of your collection. I have decided I want to pretty much have just knives that I use, or at least knives that I would use. I will say that selling off that first knife is the hardest part. Not to long ago I sold off some of my knives for the first time as I was in need of some cash. I just picked out the knives that I never used, and really had some minor issue with meaning I probably wouldn't be using them. Guess that made things that much easier for me. :D If you are collecting just for collectings sake then you have a much tougher decision to make.

All I can say is just take your time and think it over well. A knife can always be sold at a later date, but getting it back can be tougher, expensive, or even near impossible. And as Esav said it is only money, there are always other ways to fund your next purchase.
