Hello,

the spanish laws define the pointed folders as a very dangerous weapon and tells to that a blunt bladeis "more legall" than a pointed one.
For this reason I have asked several times about the idea of blunt self defense folder, a Blunt-Gunting, for exemple.

At this moments I carry a Spy Recue Jr. as a self defense folder, trying to be "in law" all the posible. But I preffer the plain edges over the Spyder edges due to I like to have and maintain a good razor-sharp in my defensive tool, and the Spider-edgeis difficult to re-sharp to a razor-sharp level.

Yesterday I was seeing the Spyderco Cathalog and I notice that the Delica training (red handles) has a AUS-6 steel bladeand I wantto ask for your opinion about sharp this blade. Would this AUS-6 edge be able to be sharpened?, will this blade maintain fine the sharp?.

What about the Drone (Gunting Trainer) GIN-1 blade be able to be sharpened?
What do you think? I am only trying to find a good selfdefense folder "in law" to carry it here, in Spain.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Best wishes from spain,

OSvaldo

Both of these steels are very good and you could have an edge ground on them.

Putting an edge on a trainer would require grinding the entire blade. That can be very difficult and would require the right equipment and skill. Another option would be to buy a standard pointed knife and grind down the point to a blunt end. That would be much easier and leave you with the original good factory edge, although a shorter blade. You could also grind out the serrations from a Rescue more easily than grinding a trainer. Plus the trainer's blade steel would not hold an edge very well. AUS-6 is not the best and may not be hardened very well in a trainer.

Another reason not to sharpen a trainer is that the red handle signals a safe knife. It would be sad if someone got hurt by this sharpened trainer thinking it was safe. If that happened in the US, you might find yourself in civil court after that.

True that. Osovaldo, what about a straight razor? The end is about as blunt as it comes.

Regardless of steel type, why would Spyderco heat-treat its trainers? (Extra expense with no purpose.) For anyone who owns a trainer, try cutting its blunt edge with a regular Spydie (or any other decent blade). Or just try scratching its surface. I'll bet the trainer is appreciably softer.

Hello,

thanks for your contributions. I have benn on a business travel and I was not able to reply you since today.

After read your advices I have decide to buy a standard DElica and them, blunt it.

I have an old full metal Delica (the first I bought 11 years ago) with a Spider Edge that is 3mm thickness blade. The modern steel handle Delica has a 2,5mm thickness blade and, in order to blunt the point I preffer to use a 3mm thickness blade.

Do you know if is avaliable a 3mm Delica plain Edge with 3mm thicknes blade??

Thanks, again, for your help.

Best Wishes from Spain,

OSvaldo

Have you looked at the Pro-grip LWT? This might work very well also. It is about the same handle size but a deeper, blunter blade.

Hi RevolverGeek,

thanks for your idea. I have a friend from your country that is able to modify a Delica blade so I think I finally will do this.

I know the Pro-Grip but I need a totally blunt blade.

Anyway, thanks to help me with your ideas.

Kind regards from Spain,

OSvaldo
