Just wanted to get some ideas as to what others are using. For short day hikes I have been using small backpacks (1200-1800cbi) and fanny packs (800 cbi)to carry gear. I am thinking of going to a shoulder bag. How many of you use this system to carry you goods in. What have you discoverd to be pros and cons of this method of carry.

Thanks,

Colt

I see nothing wrong with your choices, mate. If they work for
you then that is all that matters. I would , however, carry at
least a blade(s) on me at all times. If ya loose the bag you've
still got the basic tool handy.

The only problem Ive found with a shoulderbag is that the weight can get to much for one shoulder if your like me and carry to much

Hello Colt, get a bike messenger bag.I've used one for the the last 10 year's and it's still up and running;)It'll go place's that won't allow backpack's. I put my .45 and .357 with 200 round's and cleaning gear and walk to the range,no one the wiser. Low Profile! The Bike Messenger Bag has a second strap which stabilize's the load. If you walk with a cane ,like I do, you can put your stuff in it and still have one hand free. You don't have to take it off to gain access just swing it around front.I've traveled around the world with mine from Plane to hotel to business meeting to the shore and hill's it just fits in. mine is a modifide design with a zipper around the sides and bottom ,letting it expand, and it look's like briefcase.Right now it sit's loaded with some gear Plus a HI Khukuri. Just be realistic about your load; that strap start's to really dig in if you overload. Here's some link's: http://www.bikelane.com Http://www.pushtheenvelope.com http://timbuk2.com http://www.bagstogo.com. :) Akabu

akabu, I also must walk with a cane due to arthiritis in my legs. You
reply about the bike messenger bag is an answer to a question I ,until
now , could not solve. My grateful thanks to you, mate for the links.
:D :D :D :D

Another vote for the messenger bag. I normally use mine as a briefcase but I also use it if I need to carry something a little larger than my fanny pack. My strap is wide enough to handle all of the weight and long enough that I can swing the bag so it's almost behind me.

your welcome Tightwad.:D It also a nice place to hang the cane :} Frank thier is also attachment's that you can put on the strap for cell phone and multi-tool/min-mag that I'am looking at,I saw it at Home Depot made for the contruction trade. It has a belt clip and strap loop. The pushtheenvelope bag look's interesting, but the color would have to be more low key.

The messenger bags look very comfortable for walking or biking. I never had any interest in them before, mainly because I assumed that they would be awkward if I had to move fast. They look like they might bounce around a lot, but I see now from the pictures that they have a chest strap for stability.

The reason this is important to me is that I have had problems with aggressive/feral dogs before and had to get out of an area fast. My knapsack is very stable, secure, and balanced, but that was more by good luck than planning. Every piece of gear that I get now, I consider how much it might limit my mobility.

As far as support goes, I guess I would still prefer to distribute the weight evenly, rather than put it all on one shoulder.

as an aside, if you carry a load in the bag that's a tad too heavy, you can shorten the shoulder strap till the bag rest's on your hip, then adjust the waist strap just enough to hold in place. As for people without cane's doing a walkabout get a walking staff.1: it takes some of the load to your leg's off. 2:It help's keep you steady in uneven terrain. 3:It's in your HAND in time of trouble. You have a problem with feral dog's Tarsier ? you have no idea what a 3rd world or not so 3rd world country has in the way of "Village Dog's " thier smart and not afraid of Men and they "pack up" at sundown looking for fun&game:eek:

We don't need no stinking fanny pack!!!!!!!!!!!!

Go for the shoulder bag. They have stood the test of time!!!!!;)

fanny pack's have thier place, tight spot's bushwhacking, climbing, fishing. Some of the new one's have a shoulder strap to take the weight off your midriff. I used one when I did long distance bike rides. The problem with them in that mode was the Bumpy road's [read Humungous pothole's ]that #@&*# bag would just bounce out time with my body and bike:mad: Fanny Pack's just are not as felxible as BMB,can you picture me going to a business meeting with one tied around my suit:D
