Saw you mention Salinas in another post but did not want to de-rail it.

Would that be Salinas, California?

That's the place. Fellow forumite and Cantina member Sweet also lives in Salinas. My theory is that Monterey Bay must be some kind of planetary locus connected to BirGhorka, because so many of their knives end up here! :D

Why, are you from this area as well?

Lived in Salinas from 1983-1986. My step-father was transferred there to work in Monterey for Cambridge Diet Co. I went to High School at Palma Catholic H.S. from 83-86. Had to move back to Georgia after graduation due to my step-father losing his job. Great memories of the place and I loved hiking around El Toro park across from where we lived. Place is too damn expensive in terms of cost of living though. One day I would like to take my wife there and show her around. Priority vacation is to one day go to Ireland.

Just enjoying life in Northwest Georgia now.

Toro park is nice, so you must have lived in the Toro homes right across 68 from there in South Salinas. I drive past there every day. Palma is a great school, but it's big bucks every year to go there now; 8 or 9 thousand per year I think. Great academic program though.

They made a lot of improvements to their academic programs AFTER I left. Prior to that they were no better than Salinas or Monterey High.

Yes I lived in the subdivision right across from the park with the gas station. As I remember it was Manolete Drive or Street. Think our house sells for around 600,000 now. Nothing special either - 1/2 acre lot, 3 bedroom, 2.5 bath, 2 story.

Still I enjoyed it as a kid. Only part that was bad was my junior & senior year I had to work full time at McDonalds in Monterey while going to school to pay for school since my stepfather had lost his job. My mother worked for the Coasting newspaper/newsletter in Carmel and did not pay enough to cover the bills. We stayed long enough for me to graduate then moved. Think my parents finally got out of debt from that place by 88-89. Beautiful place.

Two trips to DLI and a yearly return to make me happy again...

It's the one thing or place that let's me know God still exists now that Yosemite valley has been turned into a cesspool...

I went to the Monterey Institute of International Studies in 2001 and volunteer at the aquarium. I'm going up there next week to meet with some friends on the area. Still miss the place.

Like I said it's a beautiful place. Where I live now (Calhoun, Ga.) is still a nice small town but growing. North Georgia still has some nice wilderness to enjoy. Basic Americana type place but it will be a good place to raise my boys. I would not move back to Atlanta unless I was making very good money and could afford a upper class gated community and private schools for my boys. Around here my boys will have the chance to go fishing and hunting without someone trying to tell them how it is wrong to hurt animals. There is a small park with a nice small lake to go swimming in without contamination from jetskis and houseboat sewage. Ethics, Values and a persons word are still regarded as something. The only thing I have to worry about here is my boys being complacent and settling for a factory job in 1 of the carpet mills instead of trying to improve their education or find a career. Still it's better than the big cities to me.
