To Swing Or Not To Swing?

As noted in another post, this weekend I came across PROTOTYPE # 20 of 50 BM 42. I was unable to purchase it at the time but the seller was kind enoutgh to hold it for me. It is on it's way to me as I type.
The question is since this is the first and only BM 42 I have been able to get my hands on do I use it or put it away in my collection? If the one I ordered comes in before the end of the month it will seem a shame to degrade this to "used" status when I could keep it "as new". I mean is the collector interest so high that I would be doing myself a disservise by using this knife?
On another note, I do not think this knife has a BM box. Should it have or were the prototype knives shipped without boxes?

If it were me, I wouldn't swing it. I think you would be definitely doing the knife a disservice by swing it. I'm pretty sure the pre-production's will be worth more, than a regular production, and I know the prototypes will. I'm not even going to swing my pre-production 42. There were only 50 of the prototype's made and 200 of the pre-productions. Bali-song's that only a couple of hundred made of sold a lot higher then ones that sold for the same price new.
Compare the BM10 and BM11 or the BM68 and the BM69. The BM11 and BM69 had tanto blades. The BM10 and BM68 had utility blades. There were only a few hundred of these made(BM11 and BM69). They only produced the tantos for a year or so in 1986-87. The utility blades were made for much longer. The BM11 is worth 1.5 times what the BM10 is. Maybe even more. And the BM69 is worth at least that much more than the BM68.
One might argue that it is because people like the tanto blade, but the BM69 is worth more than a BM44. Both knives have the deluxe finish and the hidden pins. The BM44 is a four inch tanto and the BM69 is a three inch tanto.
I hope this make sence and helps you make up your mind.

I personally do not believe in buying a knife just to look at it...

If I buy a knife i WILL use it....I can't wait to get my 42...

I'd encourage you to beat it up really bad. Run over it with your car. Better yet, find some railroad tracks nearby and set it on the tracks as the train comes by. Those are Titanium handles, after all.

There are only fifty of those knives. Everytime somebody damages one, there's one fewer out there and the value of the rest goes up. So, as one who stands to profit from it, I'd encourage you to bang the crap out of that thing.

Oh, and yes, it should have had a sheath and box. The box would have been specially marked, so if it's lost, well, that just makes mine more valueable. Cah Ching!

I guess the real question you have to ask yourself,is why you bought it in the first place. If the answer is for a collectors investment, than its best to keep it unused. It is a proto-type,if it was a pre-production I would swing it.a Proto-type of 50 may have a fairly significant value to the right person. As for myself,I could care less about a number on a blade, especially since there will be thousands produced that look just like it except for not being numbered.I think its sad though for a butterfly knife to sit unused, personally if I had one I would swing it.I guess after all these words I wrote it boils down to personal preference.I hope this helped in making a decision.Ralph

I have a 42 prototype that I trash on a daily basis. I wouldn't have it any other way! Thats why I get 'em!

My Balis live in hell, and get tortured endlessly! And as far as value goes...... They're of NO value to me if I can't enjoy 'em Xtreme style.

When I want to just Stare at balisongs, I go to Chuck's site.

Thank you all for your input. I do plan on placing it on the tracks. You know, just to annoy those who have not got one yet? Yeah right, maybe after swinging it to death. We will have to see if that is possible, swinging it to death that is.
If I already had another BM 42 I would still have picked this knife up to pass along to a true collector/lover of Balis. Not for profit but for fun. I have no doubt I could have found a good home for it. But since this is the only one I wave I just have to play with it. I will be helping out the true collectors after all, right?
