To tear into, or not to tear into?

hey all,

I had some trades this last month and I think picked up a pretty good haul

however one of the scores was a USA Schrade Old Timer, minute man still in the clam shell packaging. Normally it'd be open and in use by now but I've honestly never had one new in the clam shell before and didn't know if I "should."

It almost has me wanting to trade it back out again, was wondering if you all have any thoughts or similar dilemmas,
do i tear into this thing and get to suing the knife like it's supposed to be, or not?

thanks for looking

I agree with silent. That knife has a job to do and it sure can't do it behind all that plastic.

Cut that package open like it owes you money and use that knife!

Agreed, there's still USA Schrades out there unless it were a collectible or limited edition of use it, clam shell packaging usually is a good indicator of lack of collectibles, it's not a hard fast rule but usually if it's clam packed is nothing special.

I just picked up an older UH897 and I put it right into use. I mean that's what they're for right. ;)

What...clamshell, oh yea, there it is! I couldn't! Stop looking at the Helle

I got a Buck 705 a ways back in a clamshell, it took me about ten minutes to decide. It felt great freeing that knife from its cocoon after all those years and knowing that it came from the factory, and after its travels wound up untouched into my hand:)

Another vote for use it!!! Although I have a new in Clamshell Uncle Henry fillet knife with multi-purpose scissor just sittin in my shop. I did however buy two and opened one:D

I would say use it, but only if you're going to be able to give it some attention. If you're only going to carry it every once in a while, I would keep it as-is and maybe use it as trade bait down the road.

Plus one for this.I secretly have a Schrade stashed away in its clam shell but I've got others the same to use.
Maybe get another used one and see how you go with that. After all once you pull a tooth you can't put it back.

I'm going counterculture here and say leave it in the clamshell. Get yourself another Old Timer for cheap, and use that one. If you don't think the new one has become something special in 10 years, crack it open. But once you open it, there is no going back.

Wait, what was I thinking? You'll want to keep it in the clamshell so that when you croak in 50 years, your wife's next husband will have it NIB to open and fondle. He's going to need a new knife while he's riding around in your car and wearing your clothes. You see, we gotta think of others first.

Oh the pain. ROTFL

....despite all the good points made (it is my first and only minuteman, i could find a used one cheap easily etc atc)...well...

I think it's happier now :)

thanks all, was honestly torn, I feel lighter and happier now to

I hope that you fully inhaled that good Schrade air when you cut into the clamshell. lol Did it smell like better times? :)
