I'm interested some part-time or volunteer SAR work, basically as a way to keep fit, maintain and learn various skills, and 'give back' in a sense. ARe there such positions and opportunities?

I'm an experienced climber, hunter, hiker, mountain biker, etc, and an ARMY vet from the Desert Storm era, but have never done any SAR work in particular but am sure I could.

Anyone suggest some resources, have any advice, etc, especially with respect to SAR activities and teams in Colorado - front range in particullar?

SAR is a litle different from state to state. To find a team try doing a google search for SAR teams in Colorado. If all else fails contact your county sheriff. Once you find a team in your area contact them and see about attending one of their meetings or if they do an open house attend. Then corner somebody and start asking questions.

NASAR is a good resource and they are trying to establish a national standard. Most teams train to their standards.

Sorry if this is kind of vague. I don't know about SAR in Colorado and I don't want to steer you wrong.

Glad I could help. Let me know if I can answer any other questions or at least point you in the right direction.

Whatever... Like you know what you're talking about. You've probably haven't even been out on a mission! (In the last 10 days...)

And like you know about SAR training! What are you, some sort of Training Officer for a SAR Team???? (Oh wait... YOU ARE!!!)

Sounds like James already gave you some pretty good advise, I would second everything he said.

JAMES: See ya this weekend, assuming the wife doesn't pop!

I grew up in Colorado Springs and the El Paso County SAR team was very active. http://www.epcsar.org/

My scoutmaster was involved on a regular basis. Once we were older, he told us about cleaning up following the Big Thompson flood in '76. Nasty stuff, to be sure.
