To Thong or not to Thong, that is the question

About to finish up my latest work "the shift" after changing to hand tools only (well I used a drill press to drill 3 holes). It's a very slender EDC blade and the wife asked if I was going to put a thong tube in it. I decided to ask the peanut gallery :) If I do a thong tube I've got some bits of ivory that I am going to turn for a lanyard bead (well if I don't mess it up.)

Still have to finish shaping the handle, clean it up, blue the fittings, etch my mark and stuff... Almost 8" overall, curly maple, 1018 fittings that are going to be hot blued after handle fitting. Edited to add: yeah, I know... the handle is still being shaped.

I say go for it. You don't have to use the lanyard and it will add detail to the knife. What were you planning on lining your lanyard tube with?

If this knife was being made for me I'd definitely say "Yes, please" to a thong tube. Were you considering locating it near the butt and towards the upper part of the handle or more towards the butt/middle?

The knife looks really good. With a cool sheath, well....can't wait to see the finished package!

add another vote for a thong:D

Thanks for the opinions guys... I usually place thong tubes in the middle of the handle on my smaller knives. I don't like the way an off center thong tube draws your eye away from the centerline. Larger blades it's a different issue.

Thanks again y'all. Now off to use that dang electricity to make another hole.... so 4 holes drilled sheesh

My two cents - thong that sucker, it's a nice looker that'll be lookin' even nicer.

and not that you asked, but that's a great looking design. You definitely have a language there buddy:thumbup: Leavitt knife is pretty easy to spot, and that's a good thing.

I know this sounds kinda cheezy but I've always wanted my blades to have a "face" not that I purposely set about it but all my drawings and stuff tend to reinforce this. Thanks, seriously.

OK, everyone wants to see a thong strap.

Besides extracting it from a deep sheath (not mentioned), does it serve another purpose? What is the use? What are the drawbacks?

Educate me.

Thanks,

Coop

Coop, I find that a thong or a dangler(with a bead) on a smaller knife sort of acts as an extention of the handle and provides a little more grip.
Will,thong it!

Or if you make a lanyard to fit around your wrist, You can let the handle go for a second to Hold, move something your working on.

On smaller knives I like a short knotted cord that I can hold between my pinky and ring finger. It adds a little security to the grip. It's also possible to allow the knife to dangle from the thong while using both hands for some other task.
