some knives hit a wall and what was paid seems weird because of changes in the market. I have the old desired CKF Decepticons. I have purchased 0392's. Lots of determining factors place these knives into a pecking order. Some may argue the 'first is the best'.

Besides these examples there are others I'm sure. At some point thinning the herd happens but before that day buyers who are looking for something Yesterday and wanted to wait, have their reasons. There must be some 'method to the madness' What makes '(My) knife move into a pecking order among others'?

These 0392's already are based on the Hinderer and now a new gap exists, and every company tries to decide the risks vs. (known history styles and weigh that against the 'unknown'). Risks vs. (collabs, midtech crisis) Thoughts?

My first thought is that your post is a bit muddy to read.

I’m going to take a poke at describing factors which contribute to a pecking order in terms of my personal desire. I’ll use Hinderer and ZT, because they provide very easy and commonly known reference points.

Function first. Always. My knives are users. Long term/lifetime function is a consideration, and I openly admit to being a little irrational about certain points. For example: ti lockbar vs steel lockbar inserts and washer/bearing types have never made a difference in my real world experience, but I will favor steel insert and bearings or bronze washers over ti lockface and teflon washers. I’m turned off by poor flippers. I’m irrational about springs (Omega, SpeedSafe). I’m irrational about corrosion, so I won’t buy knives with steels like ZDP 189 or CPM M4, even though I know academically that they aren’t a problem to maintain.

In a nutshell, I want to throw the knife in my pocket, and never have to deal with naggy shit or irritating qualities.

As aesthetics go, I hate coated blades and colored two-tone blades. I dislike Damasteel. I dislike Timascus aaalllmmmmoooossstttt all of the time. I dislike gaudy. I rarely like CF. I do admit to having an attraction to color on standoffs or backspacers, hardware, etc. I like clean Ti, nice milling, and a nice anodization.

Examples of how this bears out in my buying:

XM-18 vs 0562CF vs 0562. The 0562 wins with me. Stonewash blade, bearings, lockbar insert, no CF. It’s simple, and satisfies the crazy voice in the back of my head that screams, “YEW NEED UH LOKBARZ FOR UHVOYD LAWK ROK ADN ASLO YOO NEDE UH BEARTHINGS FORE MAEK IT BETTAR INNA LOGNTURM UZE BECUZ TEFLON GANNA DISINNERGREAT EFF YOO UES ET!!!”

Eklipse vs 0393/0392. Eklipse is my preference, because I can’t stand the two tone of the 0392/0393 (and I WANT to love those, damn it). Still, I can’t bring myself to fork over money for one, because it has teflon washers, and I’m afraid it’ll flip like mush, like the last few Hinderers I handled. If the Eklipse rode on bronze or bearings, and flipped authoritatively, I would grab one ASAP.

I’m summary:

I suck.

What's the question again?

What do multiples have to do with it again?

Yes, potentially risky?

Am I correct that you're wondering: If you have more than one version of a particular knife, which one do you like best and why?

If so, they rank the same to me, because I don't get completely identical knives I have multiples because they are the same model but not the same spec:
0562 = One in Satin + Orange Scale (Work Knife) and one Blacked Out with CF Scale (Just because I thought it looks good) the work knife gets more pocket time.
0392 = Blue Bowie and a Blacked out one again, like them equally

I don't see a point getting identical knives, they need to be different enough to be individually interesting to me, so there is no pecking order in my book. Another example of "one that got away" would be the Reate Future, I would love to have bought a Bronze Marble CF Future for original price, but I have no desire to GOTTA CATCH'EM ALL (™) and get all versions of that knife because I don't care for Damasteel, Mokuti or Timascus.

Some knives when holding it I will forget it's maker/brand and have to stop and think because I know I have experienced such quality ergo and mechanical pleasantry with anothers.

Last known example? Chris Reeve StarBenza, wether a knife will fit a bill similarly in character like handling more expensive customs being not an expensive custom I think has been recognized with owners of high end knives.

Among my 0392's some are like two different motorcycles of same brand and year I own. One will feel worn in and solid While the other rides like new , tighter and having less milage. Knowing that the brand shows how with age and milage the function remains top notch? Well I site a StarBenza that I need to recall Being a go to knife on a level of or why a pecking order of multiples might exist.

I still have no idea what is being asked. I am not very bright. Please ask me simple questions like:

Do you own multiple examples of the exact same knife model?
Do you feel like there are differences between those examples?
...
...

Ask as many of those simple questions as you need to.

Write in short sentences. Don't try to impress us with your writing skills. Check your spelling and punctuation.

I will buy a second of a knife if I REALLLY like it and I am worried it wont be available for replacement at a later date. The Spyderco Military is top dog in my collection. It is bh far my favorite folding knife. I carry one every day. I have 12 or so. The 204p and S90V knifeworks exclusives are sprints I have two of. I love them both, would be devastated of I lost it and couldnt replace it.

OP
I Read you post.
??
I read it again.
?
Halfway through reading it a third time I realized that I was far too annoyed to care anymore.
If English isn't your first language I apologize. Otherwise.........o_O

I bought the bronze, black, mokuti and marbled CF. All for with m390. Great knife. If it makes you feel better I missed out on the Chaves Redencion w green canvas

I never understand guys that buy all the different versions of the same model, but, It's your freedom of choice and not my decision by any means.

I guess it's just a different strain of the same disease.

Wait, what was the question?

I own multiples based on the following considerations:
  • Is this company known to suddenly discontinue products? If the answer is yes, i buy multiples.
  • Have i broken this company's products before, or is the quality subpar? If yes, multiples it is.
  • Is the company known to introduce 'improvements' to an existing product which makes it less appealing to me? If yes, multiples it is.
  • Are they legal in parts of the world with the most restrictive knife laws? If yes, definitely multiples.

I own a few multiples but other than a SAK, they all are outfitted differently.
2 Spyderco Native 5's (One FRN and one G10)
2 Spyderco Enduras (one FRN and one fully serrated)
3 Northwoods Madison Barlows (one elephant ivory, one single blade, and one two blade)
2 GEC #42's Missouri Trapper (one red jigged bone and one frontier bone)
4 Victorinox Adventurer (all the same. It was discontinued so I have replacements on my regular carry for a long time)
2 Victorinox Tinkers (one Bass Pro version and one standard)
2 GEC #48 Improved Trapper (Different scales)
2 GEC #14's (one barlow, one regular jigged bone)

Added: I have no pecking order for use as other than the Vic Adventurer, most of these are either brand new or used a few times.

Not sure why I'm adding my two cents to what seems a murkily contrived subject, but here goes....

I have multiples of several knife models, but by and large they are variations of that model. I've got 3 different CRK 21s and 2 different 25s; 2 different Shiro 95s; 4 different Militaries and 2 different ParaMilitary 2s; 6 different Tenaci; all the Sages, though they're actually different models in a series; 2 different AFCKs; 2 different Propers; and probably a couple more I can't think of. I bought them to have different versions of models that I really like. I don't know as I have a pecking order for favorites or in case of sale. I might turn over a knife I like a little less to change things around a bit, but have also sold a couple I liked quite a bit as they'd garner greater return should I be raising cash for another purchase.

About my only stone duplicates are two 710's--stock D2 satin blades and black G10 scales--and two 705's just the same. One each is a user and the other like new. They are just favorite complementary pairings with the 705 long-discontinued with the 710 more recently so. I don't value the users or LNIBs any differently, as I want to keep pristine examples of each as well as having a pair to carry and use. I've also got a 710-1401 in M390 that's a great knife. I might be most inclined to sell that one except that I'm waiting on a set of custom scales for it.

I'm still not sure of the question, but I guess my answer would be, "no."

That's neat. I can see why it could be fun to have complete sets, it's just not for me, maybe in part because I don't have the funds to do it, but I generally just pick my favorite version and then move on to another model, there are plenty of knives out there that I like.
