To tini or not to tini

Hello,

I am new to the forum, and have searched several times to try to find more information about SOG's tini coating. If this has been asked and answered before, I apologize.

I am planning to purchase a Flash II with aluminum handle for use while sailing offshore. My questions are what is the tini coating and what benifits will it provide me? Are there any flaking or chipping problems that I need to take into consideration? What would be best for exposure to salt air and water for weeks at a time?

Thanks,

Chris

The TiNi coating will help protect the blade. My Flash 1 has no chips or flaking in the coating after some decent use. The coating is marked, but not damaged.
The major difference is that the TiNi only comes partially serrated IIRC...
The AUS8 steel is pretty good for corrosion resistance on its own, though the TiNi will help.
I hope this helps...:)

Thanks for the response. Tini it is.

Partially serrated is the blade I would prefer for sailing. It helps greatly with stubborn lines.

Good choise! :) I have a Red Handled TiNI X-42 Auto Clip and can attest to how cool the Tini is. After two months of continuos use, the coating still looks great.:D

They currently have a Buzz yellow serrated TiNi BG-42 Autoclip available...;) Buzz on over for a look!:D Click it to go there:p

Wow, way cool. Thanks for the heads up. I wonder how it would go with my Red Autoclip?:D

The coating is Titanium Nitride (technically "TiN"). It is harder than the blade steel so it is very durable, but will wear off with hard use (but doesn't chip or flake). TiN provides some corrosion resistance but probably not very significant for AUS8 steel.
