I am from Iceland and we occasionally hunt seals up here. Anyway, my thoughts are that of wether a tanto blade is ever more useful than a straigh one. I own a few knifes and took my Gerber Kiowa, wich I just bought, with me seal hunting last autumn. Now the ones we hunt give birth in autumn, called outseals wiegh about 300 kg., we have stopped killing the ones that give birth in spring, called landseals weigh about 150 kg.or more to the point their number are so down that by natures law we don't kill them anymore. A good knife is a must for after you have clogged it in the head with a baton you have to cut its throat to kill it and they have thick beautiful fur and the blade has to be a good one. The blade on my Kiowa measures 7 cm (about 3 inch.) When I hold up the younglings head from the back or from the side to cut its throat I only use the straight edge of the blade, about 5 cm (1,9 inch) because the tanto curve is so awkward that I had to do more than one cut to get the blood flowing, and that's desireably avoidable. I had to stick it in the throat and cut outwards wich was also awkward and the tanto doesnt penetrate all to well. A good straight edge blade hase never failed me in this kind of killing or given me problems like this. I must insist my killing be quick and cleen and therefor will never use a tanto blade in these circumstances again.
