I just got a script micarta 500 from the bay. Supposedly it’s in mint condition and it certainly appears so from the pictures. Is this something that should be considered a collector’s piece or would you just use it and enjoy it? Also, any thoughts on what the blade steel was back then? Thanks!

It's more than likely 440C. The 500 Duke appeared around 1979 with red Buckarta(micarta). Around 1981-2 they switched to laminated birch wood and the steel changed to 425M.
It's your decision rather to use it. If you have the box and all paperwork, and other knives that you use, it would make it a tougher decision.

If it is truly mint. I would consider it a collector piece, the Micarta have always been hard to find in mint condition. I have one that was sent in for a spa treatment that I carry on occasion.

You use the knife, so that when you croak and your woman's next husband inherits it, the knife is covered in squirrel blood, drywall dust and biscuit gravy. This way, he will never forget that the best years of the knife - and your woman - belonged to you.

Why did you buy it, to use or collect?
When you're not dealing with some priceless museum piece or antique and there are enough others in collections you can't really go wrong with using it.

I vote use it, but it's your decision to make.

I use all my knives, and if I would feel bad about doing so I usually sell them. I had to part with a Microtech Combat Talon with Walter Brend ground blade for that reason. It's just like with Firearms. If I wouldn't shoot it, I don't own it. Of course I realize I'm in the minority.

I have a few 112's I won't use..very few. Some are simply part of Bucks history and heritage and I'm just the caretaker for now. But folks still drive rare muscle cars..

Spent yesterday at a car show with 170-180 automobiles. Was pleasantly surprised that only a couple went on trailers to go back home. The way it oughta be, imho.
