To Use, or NOT To Use

Well,

I've finally done it. I got my first Randall, a #1 7" carbon with nickel silver hilt & white micarta handle w/finger grips. I LOVE IT!

My dilemma is, this knife is so pretty that I don't want to use it, yet it's so well balanced & well made that it's just begging to be used!

I've ordered 2 #1's from the factory that I'll receive in late '06, so I'll have another new Randall.

My question is, is there any reason I shouldn't use the knife I just purchased, being that it's different from your average #1? Or should I go ahead and enjoy it in the field?

Thanks,

If your main goal is to collect and only to collect, then you wouldn't use it. That's fine. But if your goal is to own a functional time proven tool, and don't mind using it, like me, then use it without feeling bad. There are thousands, maybe more, Randall's that are used everyday. Either way is fine, it just depends on your goals.

In your case though it sounds a little too nice, I'd hesitate to use it too.

I've now been waving this knife around for a couple of days, and it feels so natural to the hand I've decided it would be criminal to NOT use it.

I am not a collector, really, and I think that there are enough real collectors around so that there will always be good collector's-item Randalls.

Therefore, I'm going to use this knife proudly when next in the field.

Thanks for the replies!

My wife and I are 'collectors', but we're getting pulled over to the 'dark side', and the voices are telling us to just use the damn knives...lol

We used to be real hung up on that 'Mint, pristene, never been sharpened, never been in the sheath' BS, until we handled a few hundred new, and a few hundred more used, RMK's...

The simple truth is, unless it's a 'real special' presentation knife, most RMK's, as handmade knives, come complete with 'factory direct' cosmetic flaws, scratches, nicks, and dings...and are still about the best darn 'using' knives out there.

They're built to be used, and meant to be used...so use it, and be happy! :)

(I must admit when I saw Don Rac's pics of his outdoor butchering of a pig with his ATC 'Hawk and RMK #16-7, I cringed, and then I saw the knife. The pics are floating around here somewhere, and this was serious 'hard use', but the knife still looks great, and is no worse for the wear...hell, it's got character now!)

Damn, now I want to go use a RMK...lol

Mel

p.s. Don Rac, this RMK 'Timeline' project is keeping me awake at night, but we're getting close now...film at 11'

Mel,
Excellent my friend! The stuff you put up about RMK's always manage to edumucate me more.:D

And the character marks on my knife, various scratches from bone, bloodstains on the sheath that never come off no matter how many times I saddlesoap the sucker, and some on the guard from laying it on the table. It's done about 5 more of those jobs since then, and each time I used it, the more I got the feeling that "this knife ain't gonna fail in my lifetime".:) Not to mention it reminds you of good times.

Plus, I've actually seen for the first time recently, old time Randall's that've been used by people for years. Blackened blade, bad sharpening, pits on the steel, the whole deal. The only thing I thought was, what the hell did the guy do to get it to be like that?:p
